As in, how so? needs a bit more information than that. What time-frame? PT/MT/PMT/FT?
Fantasy? Science Fiction? Realistic?

If Fanstasy,
High Fantasy? (Elves, lotsa magic, dragons, soaring castles, ect? Think...Lion witch and the Wardrobe. )
Gritty Fantasy? (Not so much magic, less pretty rainbows and more blood. Less light, more darkness. Think... Van Helsing or Lord of the Rings.).)
Horror Fantasy? (Zombies, really evil vampires, really scary, probably not PG, maybe R. Alot of blood, Sadistic, dangerous. Makes you jump as you read it.)

If Science Fiction:
High Sci-Fi? (Think Star Wars or Star Trek, semi-utopian, magic like technology. Everything can be simplied with technology. Psionics, telepaths, ect.)
Military Sci-Fi? (Grittier, many a literature theme, think lots of gunplay. Not so much perfect technology, rely on your wits in a technological world. Possibly Dystopian. Definitely based on the battlefield, maybe Mercenary?)
Dark Sci-Fi? (Think, DOOM, or ALIENS. Those qualify as Dark Science Fiction.)

Modern Times?
Well, you live in them. I'm sure you can think up something.

Post Modern Times?
Slightly Technological Modern Times? (Think, Ghost Recon: AW, Maybe play as Mercenaries?)
Post-Apocalyptic? (Many ways you could approach this, do you want Fallout? Or do you want "Just after the fall" like Jericho, where your trying to survive a world that is actually ending around you with government collapsing across the world, cities burning. Gangs, evil plots...)

Or you can mix and Match, What if your living in Modern times... and suddenly all combustion stopped above a simple fire? No firearms, regular people, troops... You have no computers, no guns, no cars or trucks, no steam engines. You go from modern times to say... Medieval Ages!)

If your going Past time, you may also consider going... Non-Fantasy and go Reenactment, with Civilwar Era... No magic whatsoever, or Old West Era.
