lol you posted it here too

Anyway, I would define what makes something as an Aussie film by using the obvious by not going to an extreme and thinking of outlandish situations. Really you would want to consider not where it was filmed, but rather by the main country of production (i.e. where the production company is located... and if it is bought out by Hollywood, then something written and directed by the same people from Australia who would have done so in Australia).

I can totally understand why a film would get bought out by Hollywood, but surely you must have some gems which flew under the radar? This is why I suggested independent films. There are many films that are independent and made in Europe/Asia, and then they may be remade by the US, but the country of origin for the original is still clear. While these were filmed in Asia/Europe, it is not central to the plot, and it does not have to do with the country, nor does it have to be about a family that lives in that country... it just arbitrarily is.

I do not mean to be too critical though. The US is far worse when it comes to ego in movies. This is why Alien invasions only strike the US

Not really. It's a big issue with the australian film industy. As soon as anything good comes out in our film industry, it is instantly bought up by hollywood.

You need a clear definition of films that are australian first mate. For example: Superman Returns and Star Wars Episode 2 were both filmed in australia, does that make them australian? there are lots and lots of australian actors throughout hollywood films, does that make those films part australian?

It would be completly pointless to make an australian movie, not themed in australia. The whole idea of australian films is to present an australian perspective on australian themes for australian audiences.

Basically, my point is, it is completly impossible for Australia to put out movies NOT about Australia, that are set in Australia, it doesn't work and it doesn't even make sense. lol.

Also, if you like Horror movies, look up Wolf Creek. It's a great low budget horror movie.

What's with all of these Aussie movies focusing on Australia?

The Dish, Breaker Morant, Gallipoli all feed off of amazing events focusing on what the Aussies contributed. I'm not one for the national pride movies.

Even "The Castle" is about an Aussie family, and when you say "you won't get it" it not only highlights the arrogance that the film must portray. I'm not claiming American films are better (this is why I am looking for foreign films), but everyone knows Americans have egos lol. Besides, even the good award winning movies that focus on family or life in general, often do not focus on specific towns/locals, and could presumably take place in any industralized area, pending on accents. I mean it isn't arrogance when the Americans make a film about landing on the moon, because we in fact landed on the moon. Furthermore, it is not arrogance when Asian films are filmed in Asia, because it is a cheaper local, so I'm not questioning filming in the country or having national actors star in it. It's just the Asian movies I am talking about are not specifically about Asia / it's links to extreme things it did not have a huge part in, nor is it specific to a local / family (i.e. the ghost does not necessairly have to haunt a Tokyo family, it just does, and this is not central to the plot).

I guess my question is, does Australia put out anything worth watching not specifically about Australia / tied to Australia in any way?
