Why would sage not work on a non tog race? I wish to go dwarf/sage this age. Need the sci to maintain A/M. Would you choose another pers?
for a race with shaky defense, learn rape in war is an ever-present concern once a province is dropped to 0 defense, and it's possible to remove schools beforehand. that coupled with a lack of true attacking bonuses, makes it difficult to keep sages good against a strong attacking kingdom.
the tog races make sage work better due to having extra money to invest and train with, and both have fok to make the free books worth more. more importantly, all of those races have strong enough defense to avoid being too easy to chain.
Because everyone assumes sages will be science pumping. War wins and active science gets them plenty of BPA to effectively utilize their mid age bonuses. I posted this on another thread but our faery sage had 1700 BPA at EOA from war wins and active science, maybe a total of 20 tics of extreme science throughout the entire age.
the only avian that makes any sense is tactician. any other pick, and you're better off picking tactician on a race with better bonuses if you want speed, with the possible exception of avian/merchant - av/merchant's only competition on the money-making front that has the same kind of speed is human/tactician, and human/tacticians have a lot of problems playing that speed attacker role.
The breadth of builds can be considered and compliment others. I know I'm hashing up amnesia again, but by breaching a hard target with an archetypical sage caster it can then be subject to cascading descent by hybrids and subject to all the reasons you needed a crack in their defenses.
The new bonuses to mystic and rogue may have been, in part, to balance this weapon. Thus, sage chasing mystic may seem like a close but losing race. The idea is to force range like an arms race where the mystic must focus and thus is subject to archetypical rogue. As you might imagine this goes back to thinking about diversifying your kingdom in certain regard.

Unless you expect no wars to go longer than 48hrs, avian tact doesn't make a lot of sense to me either. Avian cleric means you don't really need hospitals OR rax, and now you've saved yourself like 40% build space that you can use for whatever you please.
No I'm very much correct, based on experience. Cleric on Avian is the most superfluous personality, because Avian troops are not very good to begin with. All you have is a ****ty army and a speed bonus that is not good enough to do anything with, which gets destroyed by actually good attackers and actually good t/ms. Cleric might be the best Avian in ages where Cleric is good, but Avian doesn't need Cleric any more than any other race, and just about every other race is better at being Cleric than Avian. I wound up building homes/rax due to nothing better to build and wishing I had just gone Merch instead.
I don't know why people don't realize that if you hit faster, you are killing enemy troops just as fast as you are losing your own. If you are not making a useful hit with every attack, then that's a tactical fail. Ideally a war isn't decided by offensive attrition on attacks alone.
Well you should also consider that a merchant with no peasants won't get you very far with merchant, if the other kingdom allows your merchants to have peasants well I've never been in a war where that has happened. Avian will lose all their peasants guaranteed, and there will be no hope of getting them back the entire war, not that any race that loses their peasants . So while Avian merchant will excel in pumping elites in fortified stance, in war it will only give you 4/0 and 0/4 units. Cleric will let you keep your elites longer and you could be left alone because you are not casting gold spells with your mana. Even as Cleric you risk losing all your peasants as well but while your BE tanks on your hospitals, cleric bonus is constant for you.
This debate is dumb though because Avian military is a joke, a garbage offense that requires way too much population to sustain - (and a garbage defense which is easily ambushed and must be away from your province the entire age), which gives you garbage peasants, income, and building efficiency. They deserved the population bonus, or perhaps something like -40% maintenance costs. Humans have ToG, Orcs have free draft, Undead have -50% losses and a 350gc 6 offense specialist, Dwarfs have BE, Avian has -20% Birth Rates... it doesn't exactly make sense.
