I so do..
Liar.
Even the earth players don't care.
Adam, Lydias:
Hi guys,
I figured it would actually be much the same, though one has to take the moderators words at face value on these issue, as they are the ones that implement the policy.
PG-13 has flexible meanings of course, I was going to see the new Batman (12 A was it?) but not enough time before I need to hand my thesis.
In a way, UP (I've been posting there for about ten years on and off) was eventually going to have to migrate (in fact, it has done so before). You start off with a bunch of 12 to 16 year old's and a decade later they are all in their mid twenties... and this is politics we are talking about after all, and you know what they say about the rules for good dinner party conversations. Flaming and the the permanent manifestation of Godwin's law. Once the ball gets rolling and you hit the tipping point and the centre of gravity moves.
I do feel sorry for the stick that the mods have to put up with, the community contains a fair few rather immature guys who confuse freedom to say something no matter how repulsive with the duty to find the most repulsive thing to say. I think the novelty of slinging faeces at your boards may have run it's course, a lot of people are telling them to stop "the insurgency" and grow up.
Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your acquisition, and I hope this place kicks off like the old boards did ten years ago.
Ta,
Seb
You can see boobies in a pg-13 flick so are we allowed to post pics of bresteses?????
And I Am A Patron Not A Newbie!!!!
Pillz is just bitter lol..
*wonders whose avatar is going to get turfed due to boobage*
I'd like to see a small amount of control over some of the more silly folks on the old board but with luck they will not make it over here.

Pathetic freedom hating fascist scumbag.
well then..
have fun with these geniuses.
I thought I would drop by to pay my respects.
First off, thank you for taking over Utopia. Mr. Patel has certainly paid his dues and it is nice to see the game live on (I have not played for a while - but the wives of friends still yell at me for the times their husbands ran around trying to find internet cafes to manage their kds and do their part in waves while on vacations).
It is perhaps sad that UP as we know it may very well divorce (and perhaps curl up and die) from the game that originally brought us to it (I do recall the first time I stumbled into UP - "OMG, these people are completely mad". That was a mere 38 thousand of my posts ago. My how time flies when you are having fun). So yes, I do understand Mickster and others. I would have been less tolerant back in the day.
Good luck with your ventures. New posters will certainly arrive, perhaps old ones will come crawling back so you can kick some civilization into them.
But civilization is over-rated perhaps. Crass correspondence between the greatest minds of the age of reason did at times have highly insulting content. Perhaps we were on to something after all? Now if we could only learn to tie our shoes.
Good luck and have fun,
jergul.
Life moves forward like it or not and differences add excitement. Life wouldn't be at all interesting without them. Sit back and simply enjoy the ride. The old was simple, efficient, and time saving. That is what I look for in a forum so I'm out shopping. ;)
Seconds Jergul
pheer the mickster
pheer him...go on do it!
:headbang:
lets not start the earth/utopia flame wars again
Red X.. so now you are sumbitting to fluff?
Interesting:P
I hope I can actually keep my account this time rather than all my accounts being deleted for supposedly, "advocating cheating".
Anyway, the forums look better, there are more user options, there are options to disable avatars and even adds for me to click on when I'm bored. I hope there are no invalid characters like the last forums and that there is better moderation so there isn't mass spamming like the last forums.
"Religious discussion is permitted, as is heavy debating."
This is at odds with what Mickster said earlier; what Mickster said caused some concern and confusion. Thanks for clearing that up. :)
Also, Mickster said that no racial topics are allowed to be discussed, so I would like to be clarified on OMAC's position on that. I think it's a given that blatantly racist, hateful and unjustified posts will be deleted. However, what about discussions and posts that imply statistical differences between subgroups of people if it is justified by empirical or deductive evidence (particularily genetic or evolution based evidence)?
As examples: Can I say that Caucasians have greater immunity to diseases on average than other groups of humans (such as native americans) and that this is due to natural selection caused by the black plague and other major outbreaks? Can I say that kenyans and ethiopians generally have genetic advantage in long-distance running because their environment (eastern africa) favored that trait and this is why kenyans and ethiopians always win long-distance running events at the olympics? Can I point to IQ test scores which show that on *average* hispanics and blacks have lower IQ's than other groups and then suggest that maybe this is due to some genetic traits that occur more frequently in people with this ethnic background? Can I point to empirical evidence that shows that on average, people of east asian decent have larger brains than non-asians and then point to anecdotal evidence that all the smart students in my highschool were generally asian and then imply that on average asians are smarter and this might be due to genes?
I would just like to know where, if any, line will be drawn on discussion that is well argued but may be deemed offensive or racist by some groups.
Thanks in advance.
This is something we will have to think about.
While the examples you have listed are not racist, they can lead to a flame war, or even degenerate into a less than desirable topic.
Sensible discussion on such a topic would probally be harmless, but we have seen what can happen to sensible topics on the old forum.
If we were to allow things like this it would be with a zero tolorence approach to racism and instant action taken against anyone who trys to push their luck.
Watch this space.
Thanks for the quick reply.
You guys definatly run this place better than mehul ever did.
I would be very tempted to transition over to these boards if it wasn't for the lame arse avatars and signatures. Worst inventions in board history ever.
as mentioned in about 900 different places, you can turn them off :)

Nice! Forgive my ignorance.
There is a difference between spouting racist nonsense and discussing race issues, by blanket banning race topics you actually play into the hands of racists on the one hand who will cry foul and you will also deny minorities or people of the races in question their right to represent themselves in the subject, which of itself is racist.
I suspect the old UP days are over, this is a UK managed site and lacks the simple crudity/crudeness of the other US one.
Interestingly enough we were almost self moderating, in that people who espoused stupid or blatantly foul ideas managed to stir up debate and in many cases we gained something from it. The spam was a small price to pay for honest if sometimes distasteful discourse.
All hail the anodyne.
Will give muzzlefree a whirl, but as Seb says, I don't see much point in it, maybe the old dog has had its day.
no one has blanket banned race topics, but there is a fine line between what is deemed racist and what isnt, and the less mature will always try to turn a sensible discussion into something that is generally not acceptable.
Maybe the racism rules should be better defined...If I say something that appears to be racists, but is infact true, should I be banned?
give us an example, i think its pretty common knowledge what is actually racist and what isnt.
"i think its pretty common knowledge what is actually racist and what isnt."
I would rephrase that to commonly accepted, the use of racial epithets are varied and have different levels of appropriateness and context, it is whether we accept the range of contexts and healthy debate or not.
Even if someone categorically makes claims to say racial inferiority/superiority by so-called knowledge of genetics, even though it may be offensive, although I find the actual aspect of offence to be the insult to my intelligence rather than the possible racial slurring or validation of prejudice by citing 'science', then those proponents should be up for scrutiny and dissection.
The core of the problem rests with the publisher citing higher principles as justification for moderating forum content.
Moderating in that sense should be viewed as a diologue between author (poster) and editor (forum owner). Which is straightforward, the editor can change, modify or remove any content, the author can review the changes and either accept them, change them once more, or simply delete the post in question.
Invoking higher principles is a bit more tricky because that changes the playing field. In essense the forum becomes a platform for free speach and as such - only legal limitations on free speach is an acceptable basis for moderation.
Which would demand some degree of moderator competence and training as they would be acting within a legal framework (anti-hate legislation, promoting illegal violence, criminal activity and promoting content sexualizing minors would be the main catagories subject to moderation within the realm of free speach. Using content clauses adopted from censor board guidelines might also be acceptable at 13+).
Calling someone a damned paddy is not rascist (we would consider nationalities to be distinct races for the purposes here), The Irish rape sheep and hate jews, so we should kill them all crosses the line. Though a moderator may want to judge the earnestness of the comment before deleting).
Point is that you may as well just stick to your commercial concept and reserve the right to delete whatever you want to delete as not in keeping with company policy.
Why complicate things by invoking higher principles?
I think I saw stoffi whining about racism at the old UP board. Nice one Jew hater.
Anyway I just found jolts boards. I went to the old UP and saw it in archive mode, followed a link to a real hell hole. The supposed replacement.
It was 'moderated' by a bunch of people who have not a moderate bone in their body.
Nearly every thread was a barrage of swearing and non stop insults.
This place looks decent enough to give it a chance.
How ya like me now pill?
LOL@nazi mods deleting my jew post
**** you =)
(Edited for profanity)
It is a refreshing change of pace to not have all the old haters in here,I'm looking foward to the time when the mods realize people like pillz are coming in here just to cause trouble on the new boards ,perhaps in time he will be perma banned, won't that be special.
Its a boring change of pace is what it is. Look at the activity level of these boards compared to the other real UP or what the activity was back on the swirve UP.
Theres really no comparison.
