I'm confused Geco... you got fired for suggesting to expand the business? That seems counterproductive. I mean, what kind of company wants to hire mindless drones? Free thinking is usually encouraged in business. At least, it is where I work.
Actually, it was to start a new company that him and I could be partners in. I'd still be employed with him and sort of work at this new business in my spare time after work hrs, and I could leverage his experience and network. I thought it was a good idea because he is quite old and I didn't think he really wanted to pursue ebooks all that much with his firm, and this way he could retire and still have some income the company was successful, or even be involved in a small way. But I wanted control of it because I wasn't sure where he was headed (I'd asked him repeatedly for his vision, timeline, plans etc and just said he didn't have one - which is why he hired me in the first place). When we talked and I found out he essentially wanted me to take over managing for him and build an ebook component, I told him that's what I wanted, and I would be more than happy to sign the no-compete, sign long term, and drop my idea to stay and do that.
Unfortunately I think this is an instance of your experience shapes your perception, and he had just been burned by someone else he'd trained for a year who left to start his own company, so he figured this was the safe move. I'm strangely ok with it. It has sort of pissed me off enough that I'm putting my fears aside and I really want to start this company now.
In a weird way he might even believe I'm better off doing it myself and reaping the rewards myself rather than staying with him, not sure really, but I live to fight another day.
If I do start this company, I'll ask right now, is it okay with you guys if I occasionally ask you questions, or ask for feedback, or ask if anyone is interested in helping etc. I know this wasn't ever designed for that, and I'll respect the wishes if you guys think it's inappropriate, but since I've come to regard this as a virtual community I love, it would be great to have your support and possibly bring anyone interested along for the ride.
I'll have to respectfully decline, Geco. I signed an employment contract with a no-moonlighting clause. I could get in big trouble if I worked for another publisher, even for free. It was probably in your contract with whoever you were working for as well. Lots of businesses have them, actually...
Hey Geco, did the invite for wave get sent? Just curious because i posted the wrong email because I wasn't paying attention. my email is bmkermodi@gmail.com, not google.com.
We never had a contract, just verbal agreement. It was part of the reason why I wanted my own business, I felt like my boss could pull the plug on me any time and I'd be out in the lurch. And I completely understand, just figured I'd ask and see ^_^
Re-sent the invite Darlok.
Nice, I didn't even notice the typo either - just copy and pasted. Thanks for taking care of that, Geco.
Geco - I know nothing of the publishing industry, but do have some knowledge on the runnings of a small business. The intricacies of contractual agreements in Architecture and Landscape Architecture are quite the quagmire. So for what it's worth, ask questions here or on Wave and I can do what I can.
urk... had to work late today, so not post....
*cough* What goes on? I have very little time to do much else but work and sleep trying to save up quite a bit of money to travel Europe when I finish my apprenticeship so I'm taking extra shifts and even a second job of sorts. Apologies for the neglect.
valiant pursuits old man. ;)
wave is not working for me since they updated the email-update thing (which i opted NOT to do... i'd have a full inbox in no time)
It works fine for me.
Interesting note: Jolt is in the process of changing the forum theme... because of such, Utopia can no longer be found under the Browser Game Communities hub. Mods suggest it will be back up when the theme is resolved.
*strolls in nonchalantly, hands stuffed in pockets*
Hey guys. I see some of the old familiar faces are still alive and kicking about these parts... Fizzy, Rensha, Goldeneyes, Huntess... Few others. Not that many of you probably remember me at all...
And hey, someone is STILL running an Archangel Protocols game? I swear, I thought I started that game what? A decade ago now?
Archangel Protocols has been dead for... like a year >.< The only active threads are this one, Skysail, and I just revived my Star Wars thread. Other than that, nothing else has seen a real post for at least five months.
Hey B4, welcome back :)
I can't say I recall you B4, but there were a lot of people I didn't know back then. You sticking around or just stopping by?
I know I'm due for a post. Between the job loss and chronic sinus infection and researching e-publishing it's taken a lot out of me. Making dinner now, and will post after.
hey B4, long time no see. still wearing barbed wire and flailing swords? ^_- :)
AP has had a few iterations since the last time you were in it. Still same old problem of getting bogged down in pointless underground bases and getting way too complex with the biological stuff to get into the player interaction it needed. Ah well.
anyone want to start it up again? Probably not, eh?
Actually I've moved on to taking talents of causing madness, despair and insanity. It's a lot more enjoyable that way ;).
Actually I've been running games on my own board for a few years now. Never ran AP on it though. Been running a superhero game for about 5 years now, there.
that's right, you ran your own forum. ;) Forgot about that. What was it called again? Allethea? Something like that? Or was that Alex's thing?
B4, did you have another handle back then (I was Phoenix)? Or perhaps I just never RP'd with you - I never joined more than 1-2 threads at a time. Do you mind sharing the link to your own forum?
o.O Been a few years.
Might have been Alex's thing unless you're completely confusing mine. Mine is Librium Arcana.
And Fizzy! *poofs into Thisslewit Heavypouches*
Nice to see the best topknot in the business still kicking. Always wondered where people disappeared to when urp went out.
I can't speak for the vast majority of the group. But DarkSteel and myself ended up at a few different places before making our own site. A few others from URP ended up trickling over over time but we've got a decent player base of people from all over.
might be a good home for those left here, eventually. what's the url?
Dereksteele wasn't it?
I just can't seem to get into that last post of mine... I like parts of it, but not collectively.
After working again, I'm really unmotivated. Hard for me to focus on writing. i hate when that happens. dumb work.
Anyone have a copy of that map for Skysail that was being discussed earlier? If so, I'd like to get my hands on a copy.
You got an invite to Google Wave, didn't you? If you check that out and get situated, we have several threads going that have pertinent Skysail information (including the map..which needs updating). If it wasn't me who invited you, they'll need to invite/attach you to those conversations (I currently don't see you on my Wave list).
Not that I make a habit of OOC only posts in threads, and I don't particularly want to start now, even though it's pertinent.
keep in mind i said i didn't like the post.
A sorry is in order. I mentioned my impending boredom and Shari invited Arlen into the conversation in wave. And also sorry for my unknowing all-knowingness? If that makes sense.
I don't really see what you mean by all-knowing in this instance. He's using established facts. Arch is from Acacia, Calidonia is Acacia's capital. i think any child in the continent would know that. Cyr is also from Kell, which hates Dominia in its entirety. Even more so, she's been on the front lines. Arlen also fought Dominia, twice (once in Kell, sort of in the thick of it). It has taken much of his life to get over hating dominians and rather, hating their leaders - because technically, he gets bunched in with the rest of the northerners. Also, Cyradis is quite visibly, and at the time audibly, upset. Arlen's seen Archmages in action and angry. Having one angry at the only real pilot, in the bridge, with a ton of sensitive equipment... not good. That's a given.
As for his words:
-Talking to Cyr about Arch's past being unchangeable: Everyone's is. Dominia has tons of pilots to exchange Arch with. common sense, not all-knowing.
-About Cyr coming on deck and arch telling her: I'm pretty sure we already established that a while ago.
-About Revenge being empty: It was just on my mind, actually, as can be seen from the previous Arlen-oriented post. Totally different plot. See below for more info linked to his words and the knife.
-About leaders: Again, his own experience. Sorry for going into something you two already might have talked about. ^_- not that I knew you talked about leaders being the problem.
-About what Arch did as a pilot: She's a pilot. She said as he walked up that she dropped bombs on Kell soil. He was there, he knew what devastation those bombs wrought as well. Not all knowing.
-About killing arch with a physical object rather than a physical manifestation of magic: A way to shock Cyr into her right mind. Show her that she is like one of those bombs going onto a school-age child in comparison. Again, sorry if it is something you guys talked about putting in simile and I didn't know of it.
sorry if it was a buzzkill for you. If you don't like anything I write, don't worry about what I write and suppose I didn't even write it. Like what you did there with your post. I can easily retro and have Arlen walk away using what you have in your post, should you like me to.
If you're not satisfied with your post, why vehemently defend it?
I wrote a few paragraphs with counterpoints and my own perspective, but it really isn't even worth getting into. Keep the post, it's up and Archamae heard it all and the monologue was acknowledged - I tried to keep a bit of the tension and pace up with the potential for disaster (which will be averted shortly).
It isn't a vehement defense, it's a defense against allegations of an all-knowing arlen, when there were things mentioned that I either came up with on the spot without any specific foreknowledge, or simply were already known by all.
Everyone on the ship knows there's something up between the two characters (aram even was thinking about such) and arlen just happens to already know the quarrel is over origins. that's all, my friend. Nothing vehement there regarding the post, but I do feel affronted when accused of doing things purposely that I did not.
I would like to hear your part of the conversation, though, because I want your perspective. I'll not have us bickering endlessly again for no reason, eh? Wave me.
*innocent whistling* What disaster?
I think the big thing is misunderstanding what was going on. To me, it looked like the situation was getting worse between them, and played it as Arlen would be ignored by Cyr, generally. After that, i don't know what was going to happen after that.
been talking to shari about what was intended in teh conversation, and it is agreed that the perception that I had going into it was in the opposite direction.
Actually I really like that post of yours Shari. ;)
o.o
wtf is going on here? Are you crazies still at it?
yep :) still at it. :)
lol woot!
How's things goin here? I see no one decided to join me at BlueMoon >8U
I should mention that over there I've semi-rezzed Ark's Desole thread. It had to be changed somewhat, and unfortunately no longer holds that supernatural quality, but it's slowly progressing. Very slowly ><
