@korp How was that an answer.
You are ignoring all logic in an attempt to suckup to the moderators.
So if B&S can't get the game to work for 10 years we still can't discuss alternatives?

nope, I am in the dark about the games just as much as you all are =(
boho
fix the stupid game
pay attention to my sig.
:)
I think you fail to observe the obvious fact that their new code deadlocks. If they injected a defect like that in their code in the first place, I doubt it is going to get much better. Even if they get it running again, it will always be a mess.
Concurrent software engineering is not like building a class project at a university.
Nor do I believe they necessarily care at all about the game's future. If they did care, they would have -- at the very least -- put these guys under the management of a more experienced developer.
How many real code reviews did they perform on their code over the past months? I am guessing probably no *real* code reviews and maybe a few times where somebody skimmed the code.
How much integration and systems testing did they do? Maybe they ran some kind of integration test. It is hard to know with these people. But they clearly did not run integration and systems tests. They did not do any load testing on their own code before unleashing it on thousands of users.
Can you imagine what would happen in the real world if somebody like Nokia or Motorola sent a new release to the field for their gateways and base stations without load testing?
If you have any self respect, you would follow a decent process. It doesn't matter if you are coding a free web game or avionics on the space shuttle.
This idea that we can't talk about building a different game on the utopia forums is absolutely bunk. This is exactly the kind of place to find motivated people willing to build an open source game which, by-the-way, would be free of the problems imposed by capitalism (ads pushing spyware on helpess Windows/IE users, keeping defect ridden code secret and unfixed because the code is seen as some kind of "property", etc.).
The idea that the utopia code itself is property of any commercial value strikes me as plain silly. I do appreciate that somebody is managing the game. But we really don't need a company running everything for profit. I don't even see how this game can be profitable in any meaningful way. The minute you start adding shopping carts for extra runes, acres, or spec/elite credits, the game will collapse. Ads are no business model. How many people even look at ads? Those who don't block them for security reasons still don't look at them anymore. Humanity learned to block awareness of web ads years ago.
I really would like to see a new game emerge. It doesn't have to be the exact same thing as Utopia.
I would add plenty of ladder and ranking abilities. Each player/province should have a profile that can display various achievements awarded (personal or kingdom). The game rules for each age can be discussed openly. The code gets reviewed openly.
This is just the kind of process that a game like Utopia needs. Open source the code and manage a social network around it. When people update the code (FOR FREE) each age, you can check out the latest branch from sourceforge and load it onto your servers (or virtual servers if you still think that was actually a good idea).
It's pretty obvious the player base of Utopia are frightened & concerned for our game's uncertain future. A simple announcement of plans would go a long way.
We are also racing against time. How long can our player base survive a server that isn't working & owners that won't communicate with them with regard to their future.
It is possible they have other things on their mind & don't realize the urgency of the situation.
Would it be possible for you to ask either Jolt or the new owners to comment.
Thanx
when i was monarch it the slowest ghetto and i warred with selfish explorer there, i deleted all their posts in kd-forum:) they wrote about me as about dictator:) i really intented to drive out them from kd:)
now i am at their side:))))))
i trust in utopian community. i believe. we can do something viable. i want to see open codes and open math. but:) when we will have open code, we will not give it to omac, jolt and moderators:))) because they are deleting our posts!!!
PS: moderators. your brian ans sean can not write programs, but we can. your better strategy is allow us to write new open-code and you just can take it and generate your money as early.
now you're in new yorkkkkkkk
these streets will make u feel brand new
these lights will inspire you!
Cmon do you actually think jolt (or any other company) are gonna let that sort of talk happen on their own forums?
This isn't the real world, we dont have freedom of speech here. They can delete any thread they want, signing up required accepting terms and conditions. Like has been suggested, just create an external forum if you guys are serious.
Jolt might be incompetent, but this is one place all companies would be consistant. It's a joke to think Apple would let you post on the iphone forums about how to clone the iphone!
The iphone isn't a 10 year old game with a community that is being destroyed by jolt's incompetence.
True but it is a product owned by a company so what does anything you say have to do with that.
I'm not defending jolt, i encourage you to clone the game and I will play it if you do. But don't be stupid. If the level of person cloning the game is the same level of person thinking they should be allowed to discuss it here, on the forum of the company that owns it, the clone will be ****e too.
