Lego, if you participate in an FF thread, please don't pull a Tylas because we all know how notoriously murderous it can make active RPers KP
Edit: Which reminds me; Mars (he's still lurking around) and I still need to hunt down Byelotsar for abandoning Legacy of Paulos. Unless of course he decides to resurrect it and move the plot along to Girrant Orkiv ...
No love for my thread so far? D:
I dun mean IC stuff, I gotta finish. Just sayin lol
I thought it would be polite to wait for you to finish your intro before I descended on your thread in a flurry of happy Star Wars thread playerism. =P
Same
lol
I know XD
I meant something in here, to at least say 'hey, looks good'
Sorry, just my first thread, not trying to get a bit insecure over it lol
Im wishy washy with Star Wars. I like it , but I dont know enough to play. Sorry LK
Well then LordKain to allay your fears a little, I'll say that my first reaction is positive. I like that it's post RotJ and even more than that I like that it's alternate universe post RotJ. This is probably a better question for when you've got the thread all set up, but because I'm impatient I have to ask here - how do you plan to deal with people who want to play Force Sensitives/Jedi? I mean, once upon a time canonically there were just Luke, Obi-Wan (dead), Yoda (dead), Vader and the Emperor but thanks to all the Expanded Universe books despite Order 66 the galaxy seems to be teeming with Jedi or near Jedi. I'm neither for or against it, just curious.
The Jedi Purge (Order 66) caused the imbalance that Anakin ultimately corrected by killing Palpatine. Anakin still fulfilled the prophecy, just not in the way any of the Jedi interpreted it. With balance being restored, the Force could once again branch out to living beings. This happened after Palpatine was killed, so according to the story LK has laid out so far, it's still plausible that in 8 years (which is when he said our role would take place) people who were 10-12 years old when Palpatine was killed might start feeling the Force. Canonically, the books taking place after RotJ start with the X-Wing series which really have no other Jedi besides Luke and Leia. The galaxy doesn't really return to how it was before Order 66 until Anakin, Jacen and Jaina are born. By that time, the Jedi Order had been reestablished, though I do believe it is much smaller than the post Phantom Menace version.
This is all really rather nit-picky, though. It doesn't have to make sense because LK's thread is not canon, so he can change the rules however he wants. Just like in the intro I posted in that link. In the following chapters I've written (but haven't uploaded to FanFiction) Valuri is alive along with a majority of those Jedi from the temple. That fact alone changed the universe dramatically.
Anyway, I'm starting to ramble, so I'm going to stop >.< My suggestion is to not try and compare LK's thread with the canon storybooks or movies.
My view on the Jedi during the Dark Times is a tad different, but mostly the same as that. If I get time later, I can explain better how it ties together in my mind. But, in the end, you just have to deal with it *cracks the GM whip o doom +4* lol
The Jedi Order during the NJO books is immensely smaller than the Phantom Menace Jedi Order. There were literally thousands of Jedi in the Old Republic. You gotta admit, that was on helluva Purge. But that also ties into why all Jedi couldn't have been killed (with the canon exceptions). But anyways, back to class (sorta) lol
I don't like any post RotJ except the ones without Jedi in it. Or limited.
Thousands? I thought there were tens or hundreds of thousands. ^_-
regardless, I don't like the job he did on the casting of the movies (besides ewan mcgregor and liam neeson. Abercrombie boy wasn't bad... but meh.). I hated the gionosan thing, and the naboo thing with jarjar, didn't like the federation guys (driods? what a cop out. I like fleshier and more menacy kind of menaces.). But the story wasn't BAD. the original ones are my canon. Everything else is just filler for me.
I'm up for a SW thread I think. As long as the forcers don't go overboard or become too powerful, or get too numerous.
If there are, I'll just have to make people who - because of the force affecting them, but not having jedi influence - use the darker side and expand their powers through it. Because the balance is in effect. it would be equally good and bad forcers to start. the imbalance begins when one gets power over the other, obviously, and monopolizes one 'side' to the force.
note; i'm not telling you how to run your thread. ;) just my personal views.
also, I dont' look at luke as a good or bad character. rather much like qui'gon, mace, etc. a grey jedi.
All the Jedi weren't purged in Order 66, but all of the council members and most of the Knights of measurable skill were. Still others turned to the Dark Side to be later redeemed by Luke (case in point, Mara Jade). Order 66 was meant to kill them all, but many were able to overpower/avoid the clones and went into hiding like Yoda. I think Lucas was braindead when he wrote Ki-Adi-Mundi and Kit Fisto's deaths, though. They were both masters of the use of the Force and woudl have easliy felt the danger before the first shot was even fired. A handful of clones should have been no problem for either of them.
Anyway, they're still dead in LK's thread... and I think I'm going to adapt my character Valuri for his thread. Valuri is supposed to be a Courasant-native human at the rank of Knight. Also LK, when you put up the character sheet, we should probably use the Kngiht of the Old Republic class system to better identify our character's abilities (Guardian, Sentinel, Consular), even though those designations are not official, it saves a lot of explaination.
Edit: (ren and i posted at the same time >.<) Luke is definately a "gray jedi". If you've read any of the books, his internal struggle is constant within himself, yet all the newer jedi and Leia's children see him as this beacon of light. The Yuuzhon Vong War (New Jedi Order series) shows a lot of that. However, I think Windu was very much a light Jedi. His place on the council is evident of that. His wanting to kill Palpatine was justified, but Anakin had to get all righteous all the sudden (prick) and cut off his arm.
Well the point of my question was just to ask about Forcers in LKs universe, I didn't plan to start up a storm of discussion. Still, now that we've raised the topic I might as well chatter away until LK gets the rest of that thread up (hint hint ;) )
Luke's constant self doubt over how he should lead the New Jedi Order got them all into a lot of trouble numerous times, if I remember right. He swings back and forth between methodologies as he finds himself needing to adapt to a changing galaxy so yes, Grey Jedi seems like a good designation for him. I was kind of disappointed that the Potentium philosophy (There is no "light side" and "dark side", there is just the Force and the motive of the wielder) ended up being emphatically stated - repeatedly and I think possibly at least once by Lucas himself - as being a corrupt philosophy that leads to the Dark Side because in my opinion that would have made for a kickass New Jedi Order.
I think the NJO as a novel series fell to pieces after the first few books.. I've heard its got its ups and downs the rest of the way through but I'm not sure I want to spend the money to find out. I jumped instead to Star Wars Legacy, a comic series set quite distant from any era. Now that is a nifty series and the Imperial Knights are absolutely awesome (go look them up on Wookiepedia if you're curious).
As an actor, the one constant and consistent problem I had with the Prequel Trilogy was that Hayden Christiansen did an abymsal, unconvincing and thoroughly wooden performance of Anakin. We should have seen a brave, strong, noble Knight become corrupted by his fears and become a terrifying Sith Lord. What we got was a whinging brat. It's hard to believe Obi-Wan didn't just repeatedly smack him upside the head and tell him to grow up. Then again, looking at the dialogue he had to work with...
Ewan McGregor was the highlight of it all though.
You know, to be honest I don't see why everyone hates Hayden in Anakin's role. I think he did a really good job. I took the 'whining' in stride, as I didn't really see it that way, but you have to think he did have to work with what he was scripted to do *shrugs* Besides, Lucas apparently liked it (hence Hayden being in them) lol
edit: Plus, you gotta remember Luke was whiny in the original trilogy lol
Anyways, as far as the balance in the Force goes, I will unveil more of that later. Suffice to say that the handful of Force users that will be the core of the story do not matter much.
Shari Tana - Remember that Valuri (depending on how you adapt him) will be in his fifties at this point (18+ for becoming a Knight, 30+ years later for the RotJ movie, 8 years later for the thread).
The characters I'd like for this would be in their twenties at the oldest. We're going for young Jedi that have been gathered together and trained. Most of the older Knights and such are still in hiding. I'll talk more about that in my next post in the thread (which will be ooc totally)
As for the Potentium, I love that philosophy and it makes a tons of sense. That is all
Oh, I realize that LK. By adapt, I mean take him from my story and put him in yours, not that he existed during the Clone Wars. I was planning on making him about 25, but 20 works okay too, I guess. In my story he's about 30. I just wanted to use his character, not his background.
As far as the books go, NJO is my favorite series. Mainly because they're not primarily about Luke. In my opinion they are mostly about Jaina and Anakin. Jacen would be the whiney brat of that series, though. Funny how all the whiney bratty types end up with Darth tacked on to thier name.... I suppose emo = Sith.
Alright, I just wanted to throw it out there ^^ 25 can be doable, I suppose, just the younger the better.
Yeah, NJO was pretty kick ass. I haven't read any others, but I am gonna start the Thrawn trilogy asap. Jacen did suck balls, too, whiny little biatch :/
LOL I almost threw in two huge spoilers. Luckily, I caught myself XD
So let's get moving on the thread then! ;)
Hahahahahaha, I wish ProtossAssassin was around. Then both he and I could be mercenaries and do what he did in one of his roleplaying games. Basically Protoss Assassin took a lot of money and screwed the other players (whom were Dark Jedis >8D.)
God I feel like such a poohead :/
I'm working on the next post, been feeling lazy and procrastinate lately -.-
edit:
GI - I played a Ewok merc in the actual SW RPG. He was a crazy little farker that was addicted to drugs and was a badass fighter. He was a clepto *cough*theif*cough* as well. Him and my buddies chara (another Ewok, this one a computer whiz, he was experimented on by the Empire and had data jacks and crap lol) stole an Imperial Dropship filled with weapons, crates of thermal detonators, grenades of all sorts, armor, several AT-PTs, and a FREAKIING AT-ST LOL
Good times, good times
I didn't get past the first 50 pages of NJO. I just didn't like it. The Vong didn't do it for me.
I liked what little I remember of the Thrawn series. Dark Force Rising was a good one. I liked Timothy Zahn's ideas for the most part. Though the writers did basically do fanfic, Lucas gave the yea or neigh on it overall for what they could do. That's why Mara Jade ended up with Luke romantically instead of someone else. Lucas forbade it except for Mara. *shrug*
Timothy Zahn was one of the writers in the NJO series, Ren. Mabey if you read the first chapter, it would rub off a little? :P
*poke @ Kain*
Timothy Zahn didn't write for the NJO - how I wish he had. He did write the Hand of Thrawn Duology (Spectre of the Past and Vision of the Future) though, which I believe was the last of the pre-NJO EU novels chronologically.
Where are you Kain? I'm getting Star Wars deprived!
btw, anyone read about the 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' MMORPG?
Looks pretty sweet...
It really all depends on how it's delivered. WoW is king for a reason, and let me tell you, that's one tough nut to crack. Age of Conan failed, Warhammer Online failed, Star Wars Galaxies failed... I could go on. Mostly, I would be concerned with the accuracy of the universe they create to the time period. Knights of the Old Republic was set some 4,000 years before A New Hope. If they go too far back, blaster weapons and lightsaber technology will be in its infancy. While it would be rather interesting to play a Star Wars game with vibroblades and slug weapons, it wouldn't feel like one. On the other hand, if they are too close to Phantom Menace, they have to be sure players are experienceing the Galactic Republic in its prime. Jedi would be revered and honored. Sith would be much more than just a master, apprentice, and a handful of adepts.
The game can be awesome if they do it right, and make the decisions players make affect the Republic's attitude towards them. For instance, if a player wanted to be a Sith, he would need to be awarded by having dark side allies and powers, but also punished by being a kill-on-sight target for Republic soldier and Jedi, player or NPC.
I'll probably end up playing it for at least two months, just like I did Age of Conan. If it holds togethers, and I get the oppertunity to make a Mandalorian supercommando... I'll probably stick to it.
Sorry all, I'm still working on it. I've been buys at work, and at home I just feel too blah to think about it :/ It sucks majorly
Shari:
Just a small thing. "Sith would be much more than just a master, apprentice, and a handful of adepts." <-- What exactly did you mean by that?
About the game, I dunno, haven't heard of it. I actually bought Galaxies with all the expansions for like 30bux over a year ago, but have never tried it lol
I don't even remember where it is atm O.O haha
The Sith in KotOR were a large, militaristic force. They continued to be that way until Darth Bane instituted the Order of Two. That order, meant to preserve the Sith and thier ideals, stated that there would be only one master, and and apprentice, as well as a few dark side adepts which would aspire to be an apprentice when the current one succeeds his master. If you've played KotOR, the Sith are the dudes that run around in the silver armor everywhere. They're not all force users, and most are just normal military men. If you haven't played KotOR, first off, wtf is wrong with you? and second, play it. Buy an Xbox 360 if you have to (only $200 now) and play both games. The story they tell is awesome, though the gameplay is a bit... unpolished. It's like Mass Effect or Jade Empire, only slightly slower paced and not as fun... but for a Star Wars fan, it's a blast.
I know, I've played 1 and 2 :p
I was just wondering cause it sounded like you meant in the post-Bane Sith era that there were a lot of Sith lol
I just wanted to clear that point up ^^
I object to WoW being the standard that all new MMOs need to aspire to, because frankly it's so entrenched that it's going to be all but impossible to dislodge it. The sooner developers realize that, the better. While Age of Conan really did fail (server merges are imminent from what I hear and tales of Funcom's inept management of the game are hilarious) I didn't know Warhammer Online had failed? I thought it had a pretty solid, thriving base? And look at Lord of the Rings Online - it doesn't have a huge playerbase that competes with WoW, but it does have a solid subscriber base. The game is far from feeling empty and far from "failing", it just isn't going to be a WoW killer.
The only WoW killer will be WoW2, and even that's dubious. (See: EQ1 and EQ2)
I guess basically I would be happy if SW:TOR turned out with a level of success equal to LOTRO or better. It doesn't need to kill WoW, it just needs to not all but collapse like Vanguard/Age of Conan/Star Wars Galaxies.
To Wildfire: what is your idea for an FF thread?
To LordKain: I'd be happy to join in any adventures you start, once they get going. Maybe that's a little incentive. :)
Speaking of NJO, I haven't read much of them, but I did read Traitor which was awesome. I love Matt Stover.
Co-sign on the Vong. Can't say if I didn't like the NJO books because of them or the kids though. Really wish they would've cut down on the characters early. Had one of the twins die in Crystal Star or something. They only add to the list of lame ass Jedi along with bleep bleep 187 or whatever the hell his name was. :P Sucked that his death had to come with the onion of Dala turning into garbage. Empire/Storm Troopers are my favorite part of the books. Anyhow..thinking on it.
That said. Since I've only gotten through 4-5 NJO books, I can't say it's too bad. Luke & Lando = Comedy gold. Like the war and all that. Might go back to it. Fingers crossed there's no more slapping on full body condom like skins and jumping in freezing water.
I didn't say WoW should be the standard, but that it is. Blizzard has made a game that will never die. Even years after Blizz's next-gen MMO is released (be it WoW or an original title) people will still play WoW and will continue to play it, just like those that still play EQ1 and Diablo 2 (though D2 players will likely ascend to D3). Any game development studio wants that success, and they want to emulate WoW without being the exact same as it.
It's not impossible to have a successful MMO, because certainly you can be successful with only 40-50 thousand players. Just look at RuneScape... The difference is, game developers dont just want success, they want dominace. They want to kill WoW and take all its players.
Age of Conan, in my opinion, stood a very good chance of doing that. The problems came when people started playing it live (from beta). The game looks incredible, runs smooth, and the combo system is really fun to play. The excruciating monotony of the quests and the removal of NPC voices after the starting island made the game very old very fast. When I installed the 30 gig game, and then realized the musical score was fantastic, and saw that NPCs had voices, I thought I was convinced. Little did I know it was apprantly 30 gigs of the entire item and quest database (things better left on the servers) instead of voice clips and client data.
Back on topic, though. I mean only that studios can't release an MMO without it being compared on some degree to WoW, and since this is a Star Wars MMO, it will also suffer from skepticism due to how things went with Galaxies. BioWare makes the best RPG's I've ever played (KotOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect) and I would love to see their style adapted to an MMO. Thier games are deep and interesting, and adding other players to run around with instead of a party of NPCs will make for a great experience, I think. Like I said, I will buy and play it for at least 2 months. If BioWare doesn't screw the pooch with oddball experiments in gaming or take too long getting their servers/client to work properly, SW:OR will steal some players from WoW and may even hit 1 million, due to the sheer number of gamers who are Star Wars fans (plus all those still clinging to Galaxies in lue of it flaws).
I do have some other thread ideas, besides the FF: Villains thread. I've been developing a couple different worlds to play in over the last couple years, and I'd be open to trying those out with some people.
Basically, one is a medieval/mythological world, and the other is a "steampunk" fantasy world. The fantasy world is more suited to people who like to play heroes and characters with fantastic powers, while the steampunk world is more suited to people who like to play ordinary people endowed with extra, quasi-magical gifts. The fantasy world would be more suited to a story about a group of heroes on a quest (typical stuff) while the steampunk would be more open to creative enterprise, writing about the particular lives of characters in a set scenario. I've also got a space world I've been developing (with different species, similar to Wes Platt's Otherspace or even in some ways, Star Wars). It doesn't have a lot of development except for the species, but I'd be willing to GM or part-GM an adventure in that world as well.
Well Basicly I came up with this idea after playing FFIII( I think it was 3)any way it was the one with all the different Crystals that you had to save. So I created a story baised on these crystals, only I wanted to throw in some key elements from FF7 and FF8. From FF7 I wanted to take the ideas of these Weapons. They would not actually be the weapons from 7, just the concept of them coming from the earth and protecting it. From 8 I wanted the GF system to be the same where you actually have to battle it to get it.
I dont remember every thing I had but I rememeber loving the villain of my story. It never got far in thread form though. lack of participation.
You mean FF2? With Baron and Cecil and such? (aka FF4 in Japan) That game was the hotness!
Honestly I am so confused as to which games where which. I just now it had Cystals that you had to save from being distroyed.. or something like that.
I know I Have played Crono Trigger, Crono Cross(are they the same thing?), FF1(on PSP in America), FF7,FF8,FF9,FF10, FF12( Still in progress)
FF6 (in Canada, 3 in Japan I believe) with Saban is by far the best one. Also one of the few able to hold my attention right to the end. (Though I haven't played from 9-12)
I have to agree with Darlok on that one. FF3 was the best IMO and I have played them all, beaten most of them too. ;P
If you all really want a tactics based thread I could start up my idea. It's loosely based on FFT based several years in the future...
I have Tactics lying around somewhere in my PS1 collection... the story was great, like all Square games, but they should have waited a couple years. Full 3D on a game like would have been nice. I might just have to dig it up and dust off my PS2. Since I got a 360, all other consoles are, for all intents and purposes, large worhtless paperweights.
Whatever the case, if someone makes a new thread, I would be pretty nice if we could go a while without one of the players or the GM going poof on everyone >.<
I was playing Tactics 2 on the DS for awhile. That system might translate well for message board RPing. Is that what you were thinking, Drice?
