*hangs around still wondering when a thread will go up that he wants to play*
Hi everyone. Just wanted to give a short introduction here, and say in all likelihood I'll be joining some of the threads here, if not writing at least contributing ideas. It's been awhile since I lasted posted on the Utopia forums, but I think it will be good for me, maintaining some discipline for writing. At least take away some meaningless hours I spent playing video games and put those wasted hours into decent wordcrafting. Anyways, hi!
"wordcrafting" :D
Welcome
Diaskeaus where do I know you from? I remember the name but can't place what thread we were in together...
I remember the name as well. Also, a diaskeaus is a fish. Freshwater. I remember cleaning tanks with them. ;) fragile fish. ^_^
I'd post, Ren, but I have to wait for SoHee to post something :/
I emailed her, but haven't heard anything. A tad worried, but that's just me lol
I was here a god-forsaken long time ago. You were part of a couple threads I did in the post-fallout of Haven/New Haven (prior to Venura), when everyone was making their own board (including me), and you posted a little on my board back then. It didn't last very long, only a few weeks, but during that time I had something going on called Forging the Hero, Crafting the Hero, etc, including some location-themed threads, based in a world called Alion. I know you were involved with the Hero threads (and I still have archives of those somewhere on my computer) but I don't recall if you were a part of the Alion-location threads.
Haha, well there's always room for a old-timer to return. Welcome back Diaskeus.
Just wanted to inform everyone that my sabbatical from the boards is drawing to a close. I hope everyone enjoyed the 2 month break without me, but I'll be returning soon ^_^ I'm thinking as soon as this weekend even, but we'll see, definitely by the end of the first week of Nov.
Geco's returning?
*sharpens blade*
@ Darlok: heh... ;)
Geco: Welcome back, missed ya. Then again, I could have emailed you too. :)
To Furious players: I'll be posting in a day or two. great posts guys. ;) I really like where this is going so far, I don't want it to drop to inactivity. Anyone seen or talked to Ark? I AM worried about him.
I saw him on gchat the other day, every few days I see him. So he should be fine. Never talk to him, though, he's always set to busy/do not disturb lol
The antisocial whore XD
Just out of curiosity, what happened to the 4,000+ messages that are usually here, and the daily postings? It seems only one or two threads are active per week, if that. Did something major happen that because I came here only about a week ago, missed?
Sadly URP has, over the last few years, been dwindling slowly downwards. The major change to happen lately has been a shift from the old message boards at Swirve to these ones hosted by Jolt. It has some upsides (editing, html tags, nicer to browse) and some downsides (there now only seem to be about 12 of us).
Wonder if we could get a recruitment campaign going?
I think there are some websites that host a list of forum-based RPG communities. I can't remember any of them, but basically, you vote on the webisites that are the best and those sited get featured in the ads the webisite puts out. We woudl need a lot of votes to get on the ads, but you can put our little forum up there. The only thing is, Jolt owns the server we're using, so we have no rights to actually advertise for them.
But believe me when I say Utopia is not the only community that was hit. I was part of a couple others before stumbling upon this one, and I'm pretty much convinced it's a generational thing. When we were kids, the Internet was fledgeling, and most of us still read books. In this newer generation, younger kids (generally) don't read as much, and therefore aren't as inclined to write since they attribute writing to the school essay, which is uninteresting and usually about some topic they could care less about. It's a misconception, but I think that's what's been happening over the years.
Figured this might be the place to introduce myself. I used to post 'round these parts something 5-6 years ago when I actually played Utopia. Got a little nostalgic the other day and managed to track the board down. Seems a mite slow in here, but I figure I'll jump in. Things still work how they used to, anything one should know before getting involved?
I don't think so. ;) Alex isn't around anymore, but *shrug* we're good without him still. ;)
I miss Alex though ... i used to talk to him alot on MSN... he just up and disapeared. *frown*
yeah, he does that. lol ;)
I'd love to join in on the Furious thread, but I have no idea what's happening. It looks like there are some pretty good stories going on in there though.
Well what do you want to know in order to join? There's really nothing complicated going on atm (from the reading, who knows behind the scenes?)
Each of the players are running thier own little story in Furious until the twist that brings them all together comes along. Arkady's disappearance had put a small stopper on plot progression, so we're kinda just bobbing the water for now. It would actually be a perfect time to jump in.
Guess who is back. Should I start a new thread or just jump in?
humm.. start.. cause there are not enough on the boards as of yet...
Do we need a recruitment drive? What happened to all of the 10,000 Utopia players? Heck, that's how I found these boards nine years ago (Wooo, go Echelon), unless times have changed... (now that I've aged myself)
I'm happy to start a thread. Though it seems like there are quite a few that could use some players. I think Mass Effect, Furious, Firefly, and A New Beginning are up, though most of those seem to have been abandoned for some months.
Looking back on the some of the archives that Treveylon has up, it seems like back a year or so ago when the boards were really active, threads were started like no-one's business, and only a few caught on. Is that the way to go? Of course, part of the reason that might have been was because of the archiving going on.
I cant remember who said it but I agree and think the decline in players is due to the new generations lack of interest in the same things we were. There is a lack of interest in writing and reading in general with the newer generations.
*Shrug*
I am still here.. its been what 10 years for me.. off and on for a while now.
WELCOME BACK DRICE! :)
I would have been willing to play A New beginning longer but no one kept writing and I won't write to the air for no reason.
I don't think I'll ever leave. No reason to. I'll leave when I'm the last and even then, I'll always make sure. I won't let this turn into Earth RP if I can help it.
I would love to recruit people, but no one wants to write anymore. Maybe.
If any one wants to join me in Never Ending I would be willing to change it to 3rd person. I just have not had the drive to write in it. Not very exciting. *shrug* It was a good attempt though.
Writing doesn't happen overnight, Wildfire. Believe me, as an editor, it's sometimes years before a pitched idea gets published. Especially fiction. If you hit a block, just step back and give your mind time to mill over it a bit. Eventually, out of the blue one day at work or watchign TV or something, you'll get inspiriation and find the next step.
As for Mass Effect, I still have the plot in mind and on my computer. If anyone wants to join, just post a note in the thread and I'll stick up the rest of the info.
By the way, anyone participating in NaNoWriMo this year? I thought I might give it a try.
Doubt I'll try it this time around. Maybe find some random character building exercise type stuff and do that instead.
go to the urbandictionary.com and look up utopia roleplay. lol. ferran posted a definition. hahaha
Yeah, I saw that too. Does anyone here actually still play Utopia?
Nevermind. I understand why the Wikipedia article now.
hmm? *is confused*
I still play!
Mostly as a hobby/time waster, though lol
Jolly Rensha: I meant, I understand now why Ferran wrote that article in Wikipedia. I had been confused for a long time why regular Utopites never posted in here, and then when I read the wikipedia rticle and then saw Raki's Pleasure Castle, realized that probably most of the posts from regular Utopites might be similar to that one. Single-sentence posts.
That's one of the reasons I really love these boards is because people are so careful and diligent in creating great stories and characters. I have come back to these boards over the last ten years or so and although this does happen to be the slowest I've ever seen the boards, quality still reigns here as king. This is a rare board to have gone on for so long, with so many regulars who stick to it and continue creating quality stuff.
there are some who still play. It used to be 100% players. but... utopia holds less interest than creating your own worlds.
might i add that it is the only writing board that has been able to hold my interest longer than a week. let alone 6 years. :)
I was playing for a long time, but got bored of the alliances and gang-ups that seems to happen so often, especially when you start to build big. However as much it may be a good mirror of actual world politics, after awhile it gets bothersome. If we could only do that with real world politics.
i thought you wer here before i started rensha... wernt you in the hunter threads oh so long ago?
--yea, im sticking my feelers out again to see if theres still a nitch for me here. AKA - Dravis, dolomi, sivard, brother of Mireldeyn.
Aaahahaha ... schnak. I remember when you and Lizzy had those sibling world wars in high school. Those were good times 8D
