I don't care about any ownership changes of the game and what is whoevers' legacy, the end user should never feel the difference. If the devs didn't want to have the whitelist in first place, they should have never started it, or should have removed it when they acquired the game.
So they should stop trying out features that makes the game more enjoyable for more people? It was obviously tried out and in the end it wasnt worth the amount of work it yielded.
