88 homeless in Norway's biggest city. US: 1 out of 200

and they are all junkies who kinda chose to sleep on the street. This was found out by the Salvation Army who went out every night for 4 weeks to count. In addition, there's some gypsees and immigrants, but on any night, the total number of homeless(people who slept outside) including those groups never surpassed 100.
More people live in shelters though, but the number isn't very high.


88! If you doubled that number, you would get the number for the whole of Norway because Oslo is the absolute number 1 in this, and by far the largest city.


In the US, 1 out of every 200 people use a shelter of some kind and will be forced to sleep on the street from time to time, or more often than that. A VERY high number.

So, why is Obama so bad? He wants to help these guys, the Republicans want to leave them to die in a ditch and only let themselves prosper. Don't we all deserve a chance?

Obama isn't doing anything wrong, he's trying to do the right things by making the rich tax as much as normal people(The Buffet Law, or whatever it's called). This is something Republicans are against, they seem to WANT rich people to tax less, flat tax for them is a no go.

I could also mention the Health reform.


The thing Norway and countries such as Sweden and Finland do right, is that they moved away from the 19th century where the general conception was that poor people were lazy and probably deserved it. In the US, that attitude is still very visible. Poor people aren't lazy and deserve it, they have struck a hard time in life and can't get out, or they are born into it. USA today reminds us of 18th and 19th century England, the very country people fled from to get to the States, a society somewhat ruled by Social-Darwinisn or Determinism, people are borned into poverty and have few ways of getting out of it. Their future is pretty much determined from birth(thereby the word 'Determinism'), which means social mobility is low in the lower classes.

Very few people choose to be poor, and it's rarely because they are lazy. If they only were helped back on their feet, they would become assets to the country, pay taxes, buy good, stimulate the economy, get off welfare(if you even want to call it that in the US) and live good lives.

The best countries in the world to live in are all in the North, Canada, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland. The US today has tens of millions of poor ppl who can't stimulate the economy and live off minimum wages equalling what I make in 10 minutes of an hour as untrained labour.

At least Obama TRIES to do something with some of this, but he keeps getting shot down, even by those who will benefit from his labours.

The best solution would be to just let the above mentioned countries take over government of the US. ;)

Lol.... It gets pretty cold in the US as well, poor excuse. Besides, most Norwegian cities don't have a very cold climate in the winter, coastal climate fueled by the Gulf Stream. New York is a lot colder than the 2nd biggest city in Norway , the city I live in, in Western Norway. Hardly anyone lives up North(the Northern half of the country), only 300000 people and there's no homeless people up there. If you're poor, you get help.

I suspect a large(although obviously not all) part of this has to do with the difference in military activity between the two countries. A significant amount of homeless people in the US are veterans whos PTSD was not properly treated upon returning from duty. Luckily, this is an issue(veterans affairs) that is increasingly gaining support by both parties.

Failure the % of homeless vets in America has dtayed steady with the avg homeless rate. And if you do resesrch its lowet then 10% of all homeless.

and just a interesting verified fact so far the % of vets returning from Iraq with ptsd is round 20% where as afghanistans is around 8%.food for though

How do I fail?

Drug and alcohol abuse is often a result of your situation.... If your life is hell, then you will find comfort in drugs and alcohol. You have to remove the environments which cause so many people to get lost in drugs and alcohol, and it's a fact that many homeless are not abusing anything at all(in the States).

Welfare is in the interest of the country, you drag people out of the dirt to become productive members of society and by doing this, you don't only help that guy, but you help his kids and their kids as well, and not least your country by letting all those people produce and spend. As it is now, the poor are caught in an endless spiral of poverty, making the US look more like a 19th century country than a 21st century one.

And you wonder why your economy is fekked....

The sad thing is that the people who pretend to care about the homeless just want to pat themselves on the back and tell themselves they're awesome for being so "caring"... and once out of sight and out of mind, there's a high chance that those same progressive sorts think and say to their friends the same thing the republican goons say openly. (The fact that the republican goons say it out in the open and without a shred of a second thought speaks volumes of them, but that should be self-evident to anyone who has heard them and seen for what it is with the same amount of prejudice.)

I don't look at the homeless with pity. The thought of me being in their place has occured to me seriously.

I used to sleep in a 'nest' in bushland, also i spent about a month sleeping on the verandah of a holiday house. It is awful, particularly at dawn and dusk. Waking up totally alone in bushland (when you are not camping) is a horrible feeling, as it is when the sun is setting and you know perfectly well that the vast majority of the world is nice, warm and cosy, inside their houses eating meals with friends and family.

I look at the homeless with pity as i have experienced it.

It bothers me that although we have the knowledge and resources to build houses, we won't do so unless there is a buck in it to be earnt. It would be wonderful if the governments of the world could just build houses so people have a place to live, build houses for those who need them. The idea isn't practical, yet if it could somehow be done i think it would be a brilliant and muchly appreciated thing.

How did you end up as a homeless and how did you get out of it? It's impossible to become homeless in Norway unless you are a junkie and spend all your welfare on drugs(which ofc does happen) and there's no real ghettoes where determinism rules.

I became homeless due to family breakdown and depression, i was really isolated from my family and friends and too depressed to maintain a job. I think you would find a lot of the people who are homeless are experiencing personal issues at the same time as not having a place to sleep at night.

To put it bluntly stoffi i just 'went off the tracks' of life, but i am now doing well again. I actually had one of my older brothers 'take me in' and help build up my confidence and joy for life again.

It was a very interesting experience and one that i shall always remember.

Good to hear that you got out of it! A society should be able to take care of people who end up in situations like you. Everyone has bad and good times and sometimes the bad times are just too much. But the bad times will always go away as long as you don't go into extreme poverty, where there's few options to get out. People need help from time to time and the government should be there at least with financial support to let you be able to live indoors and have food. Nothing fancy, but no one should be forced to sleep on the street unless they waste all the money they get from welfare on drugs or something like that. But even so, the homeless people in Norway choose to be homeless in more than that they spend welfare money on drugs. Shelters are available to everyone but some junkies choose not to stay there.


Just imagine being homeless in the Northern states of the US, or in Europe(except for southern Europe) where there's very cold winters. No bush to sleep in there, and temperatures can drop to minus 10-30 celcius.

Also, I don't know what Americans are taught in school, but Norwegian Vikings were the first non-indians to discover the American continent. Leiv Eriksson is one of persons the sagas speak of. There were several short-lived colonies, possibly also around New York City. Viking coins and viking houses have been found. :)

Yes, 5th to 13th grade, but not finished until 2013. Writing my MA in English starting this autumn, but I'm teaching upper secondary/high school(grade 11-13) for 8 weeks now as a student teacher and could work as a teacher if I had the time.

The USA has both good and bad sides. This is a bad side.

Also, if I for some reason wanted drugs to be legitimate(which I don't think ofc), I wouldn't tell my pupils, ever. They will have to find out for themselves what they think, all I can do as a teacher is to give them the tools they need to explore the world around them.

Here in Ireland, being homeless means you're wet. Usually. In the land of trolls, brunost and snus being homeless means very, very cold temperatures - which are probably tough to survive. Is the 1 in 200 number in America skewed to the more temperate regions? Maybe we should be looking at 'Frozen and/or Homeless' people.

I dont think its fair to portrait the USA as the worlds worst country , its the fault of the whole world that there exists poverty and its the fault of every human being not just segmented governments.

Having lived in sweden for 12 years, norway for 1 and a half and denmark for 6 months plus traveled to some 25 to 30 countries in my short life, i can tell you that in stockholm we live good because we are eating the food of people who starve, if you go to the supermarket you find the best coffee , organic products from brazil and africa , and pretty much everything or almost everything we eat in scandinavia comes from some 3rd world country where people are starving to death.

Per capita swededn is the 2nd worlds largest exporter of weapons in the world. Its very hypocrite that in sweden we are pacifists when we get our money to buy the food of people who are starving, we get that money by selling guns to people so that they kill each other .

Norway is doing amazing because it has almost no popullation, and huge land mass, and huge oils and natural gas. Still there are riots and people are struggling.

I had to see the owner of my company work 16 hours a day every day to try to keep his business running and provide for his 5 yr old son 4 yr old son and his little 1 yr old daughter .

There is big troubles in scandinavia just like everywhere else. Sweden is no paradise and you better not be sick, although medical care is usually very cheap to almost free , if you have some mental illness or suffer from something you might just get raped at a hospital or clinic by another patient or doctor.

Horrible things happen in scandinavia just like everywhere else in the world.

One big difference i have seen from scandinavian people is that they have learned that they not need to **** each other but that they are better off ****ing everyone else lol.

You can read world news about how whole europe is doing terrible while in scandinavia banks are doing great.

Well, first of all, most of the food we eat in Norway is produced in Norway. (By subsidising our farms)

Also, no food is imported from Africa. They eat their own food. Saying that they keep us afloat is a bunch of bs, they got nothing to do with the world economy. Our goods are often produced in ASIA, China being an important country.

Also, no one has to be homeless in Norway. Those homeless people you met in Norway were junkies or alcoholics who choose to spend their welfare on something else than a home. Welfare is MINIMUM 2000 dollars per month.


USA can only be compared with countries in Eastern Europe, countries where large parts of the population live in poverty. In addition, they have no healthcare worth mentioning, horrible prisons who produce new and harder criminals and they let their middle class wither away into ignorant trailer trash.

There are no big problems in Norway, the biggest problem is that Oslo is the rape capital of the world and there's a lot of muggings, but that's because of poor immigration policies and the EU, letting scum float freely. The terrorist attack in Oslo last year was done by a guy who hated all that and wanted to punish those who had let all the foreigners into our country without integrating them. He has some valid points but it's hard to agree with such a nutcase.

Norway's biggest problem today is that we let too many non-working immigrants into our country, people who come to us because they've heard our welfare is good. Amongst certain people groups you will find 75% unemployment, because they don't want to work. There's plenty of jobs, we have to import workers from other countries like Sweden and Poland. If you want a job, you will get a job. Unemployment doesn't exist in reality, people are screaming for workers.

Norway is lucky in that its exports are currently highly desired and that the state controls a lot of the exports. A lot of the jobs in Norway are fairly high paying with little skill required. The government has a huge income per capita because it controls the oil. As a result you end up with a rich government rather then a rich upper class. This is much more desirable as the government has incentive to help the lower class. Wealthy people in the USA help out a ton, but the Norwegian government is helping out within its country. You can compare with any Western country, not just Norway. The US has a huuuuuuge chunk of people living on the streets and in trailers compared to ANY European country except some of the former east block countries, like Romania.

Also, there aren't more jobs required unskilled workers in Norway than other places, I'd say the opposite. However, the jobs which doesn't require any skill are paid much, much better compared to the US, relative to people with education.

Even though I don't believe in the Bible, the Bible speaks about that. A rich man giving a million vs a poor man giving 1 dollars. Who gives the the most?


This greed is what makes the US care nothing for its poor, since the rich rule by the ignorance of the masses(read: Republicans)

Simple answer - Obama isn't bad at all. Unfortunately because he hasn't been able to clear up a HUGE mess (left to him by the previous government) in a short enough time, certain people are claiming him to be a failure. And all the Republicans (and their rich supporters) want him out. It's sad when so many people have so much money, but no heart, and no compassion for their fellow man.
