Can someone help?
I am new to utopia RP boards, (but not to whole RP thing, on terms of RP i can say i am quite weathered and not to mention i love reading and writing stuff) I am willing to join in to one of the games out there (seems a good amount of reading is in order :) ) but i dont know if i would be welcome or not if i put my post in one of the games.
I'll be checking this thread for answers on a daily basis, if anyone can show me the way around here I would be very glad.
Thanks in advance...
-
Haha, well, I'm pretty active in these boards, and I don't see the RP boards being updated all too frequently.
I'm not too sure though...
-
I see.
Thanks for the warning, thats the fate of RP usually isnt it :)
-
-
we are a small group still very much active here, but unfortunately only one thread that is active, and this week a lot of people have been having trouble finding their time here (me included) for various reasons.
but welcome! :)
If you want to join a thread, I suggest you peek at Skysail. Geco is GM and if it looks interesting fill our a char sheet and see if he'll accept it :)
-
i never understood point of these boards :(
-
And I've never understood the point of all the other boards.
Aposai, assuming you have RP experience then you should definitely fit in quite easily. One thing that's different about these boards (besides the small player base and slower post rate) is the quality of the writing and stories. It might not look it at first, but this is the most advanced storytelling group I've come across when it comes to RPing. I looked at some other sites (like the Roleplayer Guild) but the skill here dwarves what you will find there.
Many of us have been here for 5+ years, so we know each other well, and would be happy to have you if you're interested.
-
I see, so this is a slow paced but well designed storytelling area. Something i like indeed.
I'll start reading the skysail as SoHee advised and fill in my character if i think I can catch up with the story and the quality.
Thanks for the replies.
-
we like to think we're well designed, anyway. ;)
Welcome to URP, Aposai! Feel free to start a story too if you wish. I advise, though, waiting a little bit just to get the quirks of the board down, as I believe every one of them has its own. I think everyone who writes here has looked at various boards in curiosity but have always come back because of quality. Maybe familiarity, or style... Who knows. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
If it catches your eye, you should fit nicely.
By the way - if we come off harsh at times - remember that we're rather close-knit. We debate. We're rather abrasive feeling to newcomers, I think, because of our closeness. We're used to not picking our words clean of insults and say it like it is. Almost like family. They say you can't pick your family, and I think very similarly of RP. It is what it is.
Most of all: Don't take anything we say personally. ;)
--------
On a side note, a few of us are involved in NaNoWriMo. Unfortunately, I am not able to get in on the action myself, as I am traveling abroad in Asia at the moment with unreliable internet access - or time to do it, frankly.
Thusly, many of us are preoccupied with typing approximately 234 words every free hour for the next 21 days (excluding 8 hours sleeping, 8 hours on working days for jobs, and 3 hours a day on meals and prep. Let's also not forget (but not included in calculation) travel time to and from work/school, getting dressed in the morning, hygiene, and bed-time routines.).
In hours it would be the equivalent of just under 9 full 24 hour days. Lotta work, actually.
-
Read 90 posts out of 182 of the skysail that makes half finished half to go. :) Surely it will take sometime before i contribute to the story as i am not intending to post anything untill i finish previous posts.
So far i have seen a steam-punk universe brushed up with magic and such fantasy stuff goes down there (or vice versa), and steampunk is just my thing as well as fantasy.
I have almost designed out my character, it was actually designed beforehand for another story but seems fitting to this setting with some minor modifications. A touch in its history there, a touch in its personality as well as abilities and it is good to go; of course with the approval of the GM.
I hope you dont have anything against artificial characters though, since such a character would be quite fitting in to a steampunk story empowered by magic, i wasnt able to resist the temptation, and hell warforged is one of my favorite races (Although i am not intending to use their ugly shapes, a more humanoid appearence is what i am thinking about).
The character would probably be an enigmatic one, holding many secrets to itself and struggling between its humaly desires of life and feelingsand its metallic body.
I will detail it out when i am ready to post anything (meaning that when i finish reading all current posts). The character i am thinking about may change according to the story upfront, especially if i see that it is not fitting in to the story or i came up with a better, more involved design.
-
Now that the purpose of this thread has ended, i think mods could delete this one to free some space in the RP boards.
I wont be offended :)
-
sure, will just leave it for a bit to make sure everyone has caught up. poke me if i forget
-
thanks, I'll remind you if you forget.
-
I like steampunk, honestly. I just don't like where it goes from time to time. ;) I have an idea for a villain, or a friend. Not sure yet. Maybe even for Arlen.
anyway. to the point. Aposai -
I like your character that you posted. I hope Geco agrees. The only thing I'd be wary about is the history you've put in there about humans killing everyone off with constructs the way they did. Might have to go back and edit that after you hear from Geco.
-
of course i'll adjust the story the way GM wishes no worries :)
after all mine is but a character not the ruler of that world. Also that history is supposed to be long lost forgotten history, mostly unknown by current generations, maybe elves in seclusion or ancient dwarven loremasters do know a thing or two about it. For orcs it is possibly a myth and as for humans, well they prefer to forget about their sins , so i assume other than some very enthusiastic scholars or seclusive sects nobody possibly knows about it :)
-
more than likely.
Although I think the general consensus was not that elves and such don't exist (because in previous incarnations we have had them) but that they are in smaller numbers and not major players in the politics of men. Humans simply are more numerous and because of their brevity move at a quicker pace, socially, than other races.
-
eheh, i didnt say they didnt exist either do i?
After all my character is an elf too if you catch my point. I am not saying they are totally eradicated either, simply saying that their numbers are dwindled and most of them are living in underground (dark elves possibly) or in seclusive forests.
On another point henche Geco didnt give a brief description about the history and demographics of that world and left it to players, i am not sure that your general consensus do apply in to this universe as well.
I dont, know maybe you are playing all your games on the same universe, if that is the case it is quite understandable why Geco didnt give any information about the world (hence possibly everybody interested in the RP room knew about that, but as a newcomer i dont have any chance about that do i?). If that is the case i guess it will be better for him to point out such facts and thus any might be newcomers could adjust their stories and backgrounds according to that.
-
no, but up there it was your assumption that aside from humans and orcs that they weren't quantified.
---------
about universes:
Quite the contrary. Every incarnation has been significantly different than the last, but in different ways.
two things have generally existed, orcs and humans. The first airship thread to go 'mainstream' on the boards (in its hey-day mind you, when there were 100 threads visible and 50 invisible due to technology constraints of the day regarding forums) had innumerable races. In fact, you could create your own, submit it for approval, get it approved, start posting, all within perhaps an hour or two. Orcs were much like in lord of the rings (which I don't believe had come out yet? Maybe just recently... correct me if I am wrong, if anyone remembers.).
Phoenix and I were introduced in this one. Consequently, a player called ShadowLurker killed it by his inactivity. Held everyone up and we lost momentum after restarting it as a new chapter some.... 3? 5? years after the events of the last one (involved the death of a demon... destruction of the ship. etc. etc.). Lurk was a rather integral player in the plot at that point. At least for my character. Sucked for me.
That and I butted heads quite a bit with phoenix at the time, and for many years after. (sorry... again... and again... lol.) That might have had a small part in killing it.
Again and again it came up here and there as someone else's project. Introduction of firearms killed it in one of them. Quite understandable, because people were sniping from a hundred yards with a bugle shaped musket. When I brought up the point of accuracy from rifles much longer the party in question brushed it off as magical and I just couldn't stand it. Unfortunately, it was the GM. She got in a huff and left. She ran out of ideas anyway.
Basically, different races have always popped up, whether normal or not. It's up to the GM to approve or not, but we are generally accepting of non-normal races or new twists on old ones.
For clarity on current universe:
Keep in mind we all just made human characters. probably based on something Geco said either in his initial post or in talking about it that humans were the dominant species.
I also invented a trans-planal being, that being T'a'u'weke, in the sort of hallucinogenic trance Arlen was in not too long ago.
-
yeah i remeber that, i though it as some kind of an elemental spirit, or a demon of some sort, acting as a God. Pretty good concept anyways :)
as for my assumption ,well having seen no mention of elves and only hearing about dwarves a couple of times, it seemed that the world is dominated by human race. As a result i made up that story, give a reason for human dominance, and while doing that managed to add some depth to my character.
What i want to imply is that "humans butchering elves" would not effect current story line at all, but maybe add more depth to the story as some "truths" about shandalaar become clear (yeah i have plans about that city :D but no worries i am not intending to turn it to something evil or desecrate the concept of it, it is Geco's city afte all. As for my plans about that city, well lets say not every human has had genocidal intentions against other races at that times :))
-
Quite the lively discussion, guess I'll partake and hopefully shed some light.
When this airship thread was created it was intended to be of the lighter variety. The last one I ran, Endless Skies, was more heavy on the political-realistic front, and even this one seems to be turning into that a bit. I'm thinking now of a more serious over arching plot, but plenty of chances to deviate from it and explore and have some fun.
In terms of races and the world I stated it was meant to be created by the players, and it has been. However, that now means the general guidelines that everyone is following have to be respected as well. So far there haven't been any mentions of Elves, so feel free. If you have something bigger in mind, something that might drastically change how the world is or what not, I just ask you consult me first.
Okay, back to work, the next post is in Skysail.
-
thanks for clearing the matter. You are right about drastic changes, of course i shouldnt do such things without thy permission, after all it is something you created.
It was my intention from the start to not make any drastic changes to the world, thats why i created a character that will be telling stories about long lost forgotten ancient history. No body is possibly intersted in those acts anymore in this world, after all who will ask compensation from ancient egyptians today ,for their actions against jews some thousand years ago?
it is the same matter with my case :)
-
not so much for compensation, but in the early 1900's, they did have a great interest in ancient egypt (among other cultures) to rob them of their artifacts and valuable goods for monetary gain.
Don't forget, a treasure hunter to one person is a grave robber to another.
--------
I don't think you did anything wrong aposai. Just mentioning that you might have had to change some things to your history when geco took a look. I didn't see any changes mentioned, so looks like you're free and clear.
For future reference though, if you have something like that shandalaar plot of yours, keep it a well guarded secret. ^_^ I have noticed that the more we talk about the future in the open (and not discussed behind secret closed doors of email, pm, and chat programs) the quicker the thread dies because there is no mystery. No suspense. We're such a small community, it makes sense. It didn't used to be the case, because more than likely in a few days we'd be past the point that we talked about the day before. :\ Sometimes I miss the old days, but i like the current ones for the quality.
hope to see a post from you soon! lookin' good!
-
No worries, i didnt even reveal a quarter of what i designed :)
But you got a point nonethless, the less we reveal about our stories the more suspense we get, in turn a better story comes out.
I hope ı can meet up your expectations, my only concern is that English is not my native language. And although i am used to writing in english, that might cause some troubles.
-
don't worry, you have definitely already proven your skills in writing in english. :)
-
eheh thanks, i hope i can show that during the storytelling too.
-
I'm not sure you should have any reservations concerning your writing style or command of English. I think you've proven yourself quite capable even without an IC post. It would be safe to say we all have much to learn as is.
Hopefully things will pick up in Skysail as schedules clear, and we can tuck into RPing with your character! I'm still waiting on Geco to clear a few things up for me via PM.
-
So what was it that killed the one airship thread (i forget the exact name) that had the demon Kumajii trying to take over the world and his unwillign anchor, Adkas trying to get free?
A real life friend of mine, Belfucious on the previous boards, had archives of that one he sent to me when this one started up. I mentioned the boards in passing conversation and told him about Endless Skies and Skysail. The next day he sent me like a 20 page word document (in 10 point font!) of archived posts from all the previous incarnations of this genre he played a part in. It was a really good read, but just sort of ended after the battle with Kumajii.
Btw Ren, that character of yours was pretty cool. That whole, second-sight, interdimentional twilight zone stuff was really neat.
-
Shari, you know Bel? Say hi to him for me... :) And why isn't he here? Haven't seen him in years it feels like...
Yeah we've had quite a number of reincarnations of ES and VoTs and what not. I think Kumajii/Adkas was in the first version, and don't really remember why it ended. But at the same time that was one that was most successful I think.
-
Oh my gosh...I remember Voyage of the Skies (and Cerulean skies, of course. ^_^). That was the first REAL thread that I joined here on the boards, where I got serious with my writing and my character development. Sheesh...that was, like...7 years ago. Crap. That just made me feel REALLY old....
And I remember Bel. He was fun to write with. ^_^
-
I will SoHee. He's had a lot on his plate for the last couple years. His wife got pregnant with their second child about six months ago (possibly a Christmas or New Years baby) right after he got promoted and started going to school again. Before that I think they were just enjoying life and raising their first kid. But now I probably won't see much of him between our work, school, and family lives.
I'll see if I can't get him to make a cameo in one of the threads. After all, he did introduce me to this wonderful community.
-
The idea of VotS fell to someone else (I have the archive on an external hd somewhere), but I GM'd it from pretty much the beginning. That was so long ago - reading many of my old posts make me smirk. The thread didn't actually die - the story had simply played itself out over the course of a year and reached a point where a conclusion was appropriate. If I remember correctly Bel and I coordinated the end to segue into CS.
Cerulean Skies was a short lived sequal, taking place several years after VotS. We had a pretty good character rendezvous, but I think it quickly petered out after making it to the airship.
Question: was it potsoda the guy who started throwing molotov cocktails on the deck of the airship?
-
I can't believe you know Bel Shari, seems so random now because you never mentioned it :p
I think it was Potsoda/GI. I was in both VotS and CS - I tried to do an engineer in both I believe, but was never very successful, therefore I try to get away with saying I was one of those original players in the airship threads, but I really was as trivial as a single blade of grass =P
Omg if Bel came back, and Mire and Sao, who's next? Lurker? Peter? Trey?
-
oh a second child? :) send my best to him!
right, we did wrap up VotS and started a sequal... I think VotS is one of the few threads that lasted long and got an actual end point....
hehe... potsoda.... I remember I was so surprised when I found out that GI was potsoda.... *smirk*
-
Peter, Alex, and Corey will never come back.
I can guarantee you that.
Alex was working with the DoD last I saw him. He quit lockheed after iraq. Still has a GPS installed in his daughters jewelry, that she has no idea about. lol. Freak. If anyone saw a picture of him, you'd think so do.
Corey - for whatever reason - really has a vendetta against us.
----------
Shari - you never said you knew Bel. ;) tell him Ren gives his congrats on the second, and first, kid. I remember when he said he was engaged. lol
Thanks, by the way. I am using that race in the book i'm currently writing. HEAVILY changed. He isn't quite that powerful until the end of the first book, beginning of the second. By the third, he's disintegrating enemy ships atom by atom.
going for a dune-esque thing in a sense. hard to explain. you'll just have to read it.
later. midnight. 1 am actually.
-
I was just kidding around. Is Corey Lurker? I never actually talked to these people ^_^
-
I could have sworn I mentioned my friendship with him before... anyway, get posting in Skysail!
-
That's crazy. Bel and I did quite a bit of coordination in VotS through the better part of it. That was one of the first story arc's I played through with a PC enemy - a lot of fun. Give him my regards and congrats on his IRL adventures :)
I might be missing something, as I do not recognize Saoirse. Is there a pseudonym they've gone by in the past? Perhaps just a time when I found myself absent from URP.
-
Seems the direction of this thread changed quite a bit. Roleplayers message board was getting way too long anyways :)
So my post was ignored not a good start it seems :).
Seems there is a slight difference between our "understanding" about "powerplay", I'll keep this in mind for future reference.
-
Convos just kind of spring up wherever and they last til the end of the convo. I'm always happier when everything is kept in the RPers Msg Board though =p Would be nice to move back there *wink and nudge*
-
Okay, I'll post my comment in RPMB to appease the Geco. He controls my car insurance rates and I'd rather not have an increase in my premiums.
