You guys can check the RPers msg board, but essentially I need to go on hiatus until late Oct early Nov. Just too busy right now, and a breather is always nice. I will be back then, so I hope you guys don't disappear.

Sorry for not posting everyone, but school's just been crazy and I've been in a bit of a writer's block for a few weeks. Will try to post more when things start rolling again!

Hey everyone. So I'm looking to get this restarted soon, but I figured it would be a good idea to see who was still around and good to continue.

Khalib and his men were used to being feared. "Hashashim" the unbelieving kingdoms of the East called them, after the herb they supposedly ate, which was said to give them the strength of ten men and make their skin impervious to steel. There were other rumors, too; rumors of bloody rituals under the desert's starlit sky and sacrifices to Djinn and stranger spirits. Rumors that the faith of the old gods, worshipped before Asqlan came, had never really died out, and those who paid homage to them were granted superhuman powers.

For the most part, Khalib was amused by, and even encouraged these rumors a little; the mystique had its uses. He was used to being spoken of in whispered tones, of the sideways glances and warding gestures made when he walked openly. So it was supremely annoying that the solemnity of his mission (and his dignity to boot) was ruined by having to babysit an irreverent pagan girl-child.

Said irreverent pagan was bouncing along beside him, the bells in her hair and the bracelets on her wrists making a merry jingling noise. She wore what she called a spring costume and he called a gaudy mess, to which she'd added a pair of oversized Ray-Ban sunglasses and a summer hat. By all appearences, she thought of this as an all-expenses-paid company holiday.

The sight made his blood boil. People can deal with hatred and prejudice just fine; nobody can deal with not being taken seriously.

"What're all your troops coming along for?" Vinkiri asked, pushing up the sunglasses onto her forehead and gesturing at the dozen Asqlanid warriors who marched in silence behind them both. "You aren't scared, are you?"

"We are going to fetch a guest of utmost importance," he answered. "To bring an inadequate escort would show disrespect, and be most unwise. This one is a Writer of the Book, a being of vast and cosmic power. If it wanted," he stabbed a finger in the direction of her nose, "it could declare you dead with a stroke of its quill."

She jerked back for a moment, then recovered, stuck her tongue out at him, and shrugged. "So it's like Iokhmar of the Road. But angrier. So what? Wait - why do we have to bring it home, again?"

The idea that any pagan deity, however wrathful, could be a match for the angels of the god chosen to write words of fire in His book, struck Khalib as ridiculous. "Because it had a hand in our creation, so we are partly responsible for it," he snapped. "You would be wise to fear it as you fear your god. This particular one has a reputation for bouts of violent anger, and is both difficult to reason with and pays little heed to reality." He fought the urge to sigh. "But the continuation of our world's fate rests, at least partly, on this one. So we must awaken it and bring it home." He shot her the most severe glance he could manage, and to her credit, she seemed to sober up a little. "Do not act rashly."

She stopped her merry skipping and trotted obediently along, but Vinkiri still looked more thoughtful than cowed. "But it can't be that bad, can it? I mean," she touched a knuckle to her lip, "it made me."

Khalib decided he would rather not dignify that with a response. He turned another corner - they were very close now - opened the door that would lead to the Writer's residence, and stepped through. He stopped and blinked.

The hallway beyond the door was gone. Everything was gone. Impossibly, the door he'd opened lead to a desolate plain where something had raised a metal ziggurat a mile high. Multifrequency radar antennae spun under boiling clouds and violet lightning. Square blast doors marked where antiaircraft missiles lay in wait behind shielded bays. Drab grey walls, slanted to deflect the blast wave of a nuclear weapon, extended for hundreds of yards on every side. A high-powered halogen spotlight mounted atop the pyramid swept back and forth across the wasteland like some high-tech Eye of Sauron.

They walked half a mile in silence to the armored gate; as they came close there was the whine of a security camera's electronic eye (with underslung flamethrower) rotating to stare at them. Stuck to the front of the door with scotch tape was a piece of cardboard, which Khalib tore off to read. It said:

    "DO NOT DISTURB

    NaNoWriMo '08"

Haha, that was a nice piece Sao, although I must admit, I still don't know whether that means you'll still be participating or not :p I'm bad with any kind of subtlety, even the unsubtle kinds.

For the everyone else - I think Solselene is the only one missing now - I'm going to try to get the post up this weekend. It was a much needed break, but I'm glad to be home again.

    ^_^

Ehm, so have I, except that SoHee hasn't posted so I can't go anywhere until she posts ... I could, however, flesh out a character to RP with Torroar if he wants me to.
