How much do you think is necessary for an attacker? It seems like most people in this forum advocate somewhere in the 50's, but my KD is saying 60 min. Keeping 60 though seems to stunt my offense.

Depends on your race and stuff.
It depends on your kingdom mostly, you should all be running similar numbers, especially if warring. Having somebody with lower def just makes them a target.
I'd advise a kd to run around 40-50 dpa all armies out at this point in the age, with a good offense.
if you have offense elites with a decent defense (human/dwarf/elf) i would say run ~35 dpa all elites out, then get as many elites as possible, you will likely never need to send them all out
and 60 dpa is insane! you may as well go T/M
If I'm attacking someone with truly poor defense I MIGHT be able to swing 60 with my armies out but it's pretty rare...and being elf helps with that. If your kd is telling you to keep 60dpa at home with your armies out every time you might want to find out if they graduated from the School for Children with Special Needs.

there are a lot of different ways to make up your army. Try to be flexible and keep it similar to what your kingdom runs.
maybe your kd is fortified and they really don't want you to have cruddy defense once the fortified is dropped. 60*.9=54 dpa. To be on the safe side once you do get to war. Anyway with a small % of forts, 50-60 DR, and mostly elite armies (except orc/human would have 50/50), you'll be pretty close to 60 dpa. Remember if you have more defense, you have more offense to send w/o suiciding. it's all a tug of balance.
y'know? i just had a thought. if worldwide, everyone recommended a 30 dpa instead of a 50 dpa (which is incredibly out-dated in the newer nw-based grab system), this game'd be about the same still heh, just everyone'd make more money and have more wizards.
With 60 DPA you will end up with very little protection.
Aim for 40 DPA from specialists only and then train offense on top of that, elite based if you can.

basically, decide if you want to play offensively or defensively (kd wide decision), and then adjust dpa accordingly. if you want to play offensively, you will try to get enough offense to pull off multiple hits on ppl, and then you can't afford to go over 40 dpa. if you only want to single tap i guess you should aim for 50 something. going to 60 is just madness; you'll be like a land farm
