Dear Utopia players
I think it’s fair to say that there have been one or two (thousand) complaints about what we’ve been doing with Utopia over the last few months. Today, I want to tell you what we’ve *actually* been doing. If you take a quick look at www.utopiakingdoms.com, you’ll see that we’re announcing (tomorrow) a brand new Utopia game (called Utopia Kingdoms, which you could probably have guessed from the url). Now before some of you come out and claim that this is something we’re announcing as a distraction while we think of what to actually do next, let me publicly say that this game goes into testing next week and beta testers will start playing the week after that. In short, you’ll be able to play the game inside the next few weeks.
Let me say a little about Utopia Kingdoms (UK), before I talk about what’s going to happen to the current Utopia (or you can just skip this part to the next paragraph if you’re particularly concerned). UK is a much more graphical game than the current Utopia. It’s based in the same universe and is based on reasonably similar principles to the current game. Building up resources is still a major part of gameplay, as is combat.
We think you’ll like it. We certainly do. But I’m also fairly sure that some percentage of you won’t. And this is where the second part of the announcement comes in.
Firstly, we won’t be getting rid of Utopia as you currently know it. However (drum roll) Utopia Classic (as it’ll be known in the future) *is* being completely overhauled by a team of software ninjas. Let me be really clear on this. By ‘overhaul’, I mean on a technical level. It’s being migrated to a modern codebase and will be infinitely more stable than is currently. This process has already started and will be finished in approximately eight weeks. All current players will be migrated to this new version.
Yes, of course we know you don’t believe us. Yes, it will actually happen.
So, to summarise (for those of you asleep at the back), we’ve got a brand new Utopia Kingdoms game (very soon) and a fixed Utopia Classic game (not quite as soon). Let the yelling commence. I’ll reply to as many of the sensible questions on this thread as I can.
