Penalty to birth rate is lessened by the fact you'll be running lots of homes, and the fact that you have a larger popultation to start with
And humans will have a hard time doing more thief damage than a gnome rogue. If they want enough science to compare tpa, they'll have to be sage or merchant and hence won't have as much stealth
