Some more detailed information:
The server is currently paused while the developers resolve the current issue. This means you can log in, build, train etc but the game will not advance until it is un-paused. We do not have an ETA on when it will be un-paused as of yet, as the developers are still running diagnostics on the issue on a separate test server, this should mean that with proper testing the problem does not re-occur on the live server.
It does not seem that the problem was caused by any hardware limitations or by a DoS attack.
