this is because it is one of the earliest words ever invented so people back in the day didn't have proper language.
so when one guy assumed another guy did something bad he started fighting him. so they fought, and this was of course usually over some girl so she told them they were just making asses out of themselves.
in one of these incidents the two fighting parties agreed and one said to the other: "ass. you. me"
ah yes, and after many a laugh about it they created the word by saying it really fast, then pronouncing it a bit more clearly. then they proceeded to performing the first threesome with the female and they all live happily ever after, never assuming anything ever again.
