We have a province that is inactive and then went into vacation mode. Has been for about 1 1/2 weeks with nothing in the forums as to why. My question is: How long can it sit in VM until it is deleted for inactivity?

A prov in vacation mode will never be deleted for inactivity.
So he will just sit there in VM till the end of age and there is no way we can get rid of him?

Your monarch can cancel the Vacation mode if you wish to get rid of the prov.
