    Faery/Mystic Build strategy

I am returning to Utopia after about 5 years of not playing. I am still trying to remember/figure things out. Does anyone have a good building strategy for someone that would like to be a Super Mage? Thanks.

Super mage probably best as an Elf. 50% wpa vs 30% wpa bonus pretty large. Unless there's a faery spell you want or something. :P

20% guilds... dice, LL, explore, train defense. Forts and Homes are nice too. Remember to get a functionable tpa as well and keep up Clear Sight to fend off t/ms.

Super mage doesn't really need the wpa or wpa mod, just the normal benefits of playing a purely defensive province and a healthy level of expansion.

You'll be torn to shreds outside of war without allies to retaliate for you, though. Inside war it's another matter, because most people aren't going to invest the resources necessary to take down a Faery before they can raise defenses and become unbreakable.

I believe Faery is the best supermage option due to Faery's spellbook, defense, and economy, but if you run a supermage you should have other t/m provinces in your kingdom to handle stuff like meteors, so your supermage can spam good instant-damage spells - especially LL, which works well both for trapping acres and as an adjunct to standard chain tactics, albeit a very random one. There are a lot of instant damage spells that work well.
Since you are Faery and should have a servicable tpa, you can use some offensive thief ops... the usual standbys of nightstrike and basic robbery ops work well even on bad tpa, so smart target selection will allow you to utilize thieves without dens. The worst problem is dealing with enemy t/ms, especially rogues who would love to propaganda your defense and wpa, so unless you have top-notch tpa Clear Sight is mandatory against a good kingdom.

Elf super-mages can work, but you really don't need the wpa and Elf has weaknesses that need to be accounted for. As a straight t/m, Elf is servicable and effective at spamming meteors and other duration spells, with more potential to attack stuff.

People don't have to be SK-level to use t/ms.

Elf's have a stronger economy, though (ignoring ToG and FoK). +10% population vs Faeries and cheaper defense. And with an elf super mage, you have to potential to reliably land MS on faeries. ^_^ I don't know what in the faery spell book you could be wanting for war.

Maybe that +30% instant spell damage is alluring you? Well Elves get an extra 1% mana (so non Mystic, that's an extra 33% spells; +25% spells for mystic; assuming you're active and keep your mana bar below 50%ish). He asked about being a supermage. Elves are the most potent mages. :P Plus you *can* attack if you want, too. Or you can go t/M. Or a/t/M. :P

On second thought, I'm inclined to agree with Spartacus - often t/m gets played by people who think in short-term, and in that situation t/m is worthless for you and your kingdom.

There are examples of good t/ms outside of super-kingdoms and warring kingdoms, though.

A good t/m or super-mage has to play a strong economic role - since they are ideally protected against being attacked and being opped, in a lot of situations the t/m can be the only province generating significant income and soldiers. Faeries are able to do this better.

For most kingdoms though, pick Elf/Mystic and train some elites - it'll work better in the long run. Good tpa is helpful, but not absolutely necessary if using a high-epa strategy.

Faery has its place in the ghetto. Don't hate. However, you're not gonna be doing your kingdom any good at this late stage in the age. It takes time to build a strong faery, getting enough honor if you're lucky, science, and especially wpa to compete with everyone else who has been playing the whole age.
