the method TeddybearSTHLM will generate the numbers marv gave if u pull from solds from each category and then pull solds. ie
lose about 9.22% of whats at home and always round down
thieves: 2000 * 0.0922 = 184 (soldiers leave instead)
elites: 0 leave (all out)
def-specs: (4480+61) * 0.0922 = 418 (soldiers leave instead)
off-specs: 0 leave (all out)
solds: (680-184-418)*0.0922=7
184+418+7=609.
Doing the same method u can get the second number marve gave...
BTW if this is true then someone should correct the wiki as.
"Troop losses are calculated on all troops but only troops that are home will leave (troops out are immune from desertion, but will influence the total amount of troops that leave)."
is wrong or at best VERY misleading. \
This still seems wrong though, but far be it from me to claim your numbers are off.
I think they meant give the math to persain to work out....not the credits. And i'd agree u just rounded wrong but your method was gave the number the op was looking for.

If anyone cares if the above is all correct the Wiki really should read
Population exceeds Max Population by 15%: Your army will refuse to attack and your troops (including thieves) will begin to desert. If you have sufficient soldiers then they can desert in place of a particular troop type, reducing your losses of that troop type. Soldier desertions made this way lower your overall losses as total soldier desertions are calculated on the number of soldiers remaining after all other troops have deserted. The number of troops that will be lost the next tick is as follows.
Loss rate= 0.20*[1-(Current pop-peasant losses next tic)/max pop]
Military and thieve losses by type: # of Troops at home *Loss rate
Sold losses:Loss rate* MAX[0,# solds at home -(Leet losses+Theive losses+spec losses)]
Total Losses=Leet losses+Spec losses+Thief losses+Sold losses
The question that would need to be determined is which troops type gets checked first/second, third.

Soldiers go first
Then offspecs
Then defspecs
Then thieves
Then leets
As everybody allready knows, if you got enough soldiers the soldiers will replace the desertionrate on other troops.
I've checked against other sets of data and this is exactly correct. TeddybearSTHLM and Persain win! 20 credits to each of them.
It was a very clever thing (in my opinion) to subtract the soldiers that would leave in place of other troops before calculating how many soldiers would leave.
When you are chained down, it is good to know how desertions are calculated so that you can either 1.) release a specific number of thieves, specs, etc to soldiers in order to cover desertions of other, more desirable troops or 2.) take in soldier aid to cover the desertions of more valuable troops.

Just to make it clear (and it would need to be for the wiki) when solds leave in place of actual troops they first save leets then Thevies then def and finally off?
Are u sure its not distributed evenly among the troop classes? That is if im suposed loose 500 leets and instead i release 500 dspecs into solds i lose ZERO leets?
if you have enough solds, you only lose soldiers. but tested and works.
tho if you dont have enough, then it starts from the top.
that is correct, you can protect a whole class (ie elites) by releasing someting else that is before it in the desertion-chain, just like Mary Lennox said. You just need to make sure to have 500 solds or more, if you have 495 solds and 500 elites are supposed to leave, you still lose elites.
It's just a bit misleading imo. Troops out still count towards overpop, but they're not taken into account when the desertioncalcs kick in, other than adding to overpop. The main thing here is that it is a percentage of troops that leaves, and it is only calced for those troops at home, while the troops out adds to that % but doesnt increase the raw numbers, or smth :P dunno if you got that explanation, not sure I got it myself either but... :)

Had a kd mate write down all his numbers yesterday when he got chained:
max pop - 41052
current pop - 121829
peasants - 25235
troops at home - 1509 solds, 83 ospcs, 4827 dspcs 731 leets, 3848 thieves
2053 deserted at tick.
As far as I am interpreting this thread, none of the posted formulas fit to what just happened. It is worth noting that this prov was nightmared heavily and had a lot in training (2486 dspec, 237 leet and 808 thieves incoming every tick).
