Sitting question

I'm sitting for one of my kingdommates, and the 3 weeks are up today. I can't get ahold of him, he won't be back for another week. I don't know what happens to his province once the sit credits are all done, does he go into protection? or is he left wide open? I would like to know if it's the ladder so I can at least put his province into protection until he returns.
Or is there a way I could purchase more credits and continuing sitting for him?

You can't put a prov in protection if you're sitting.

If sitting expires the prov will just be left in the open.
