Utopia- not what it used to be?

    Hey all,

I played Utopia briefly back in 2002. Back then it had a much more wholesome layout to it, catchy background music, and seemed to "pull" you into the game world. Now it seems kinda... ehh. Of course I opted for Kamimazegame's "Dominion" and never got into Utopia too deeply, but does anyone else feel this way about the changes?

Or am I totally mistaken and in a parallel universe now?

you are mistaken. go to classic view in settings and it looks basically as it always had to me.

What makes utopia utopia is the people.

The owners, devs, graphics, tools, domain, music, code, ect, can all change, but the community is still here :)

    Music ftw!

But it does have a more modern look that perhaps is slightly less nostalgic. The classic is close enough. I would love to see some sort of utopia / tribal wars hybrid... Whoever made the utopia clone should make that instead:P

It would be fun to have utopia style races kingdoms but then have them laid out in a tribal wars style world!

Thank you all for your replies.

Perhaps I am a nostalgic thrill seeker. Perhaps...but even so, there was something palpable that just feels to be missing. When you were in a kingdom you FELT like you were in a kingdom. Now its like looking into a computer screen.

I think what I am sensing is a much higher percentage of alts and bots relative to the human player base. Thoughts?

And yes, classic view is better, thanks.

Gotta be the music. It's like Titanic without Celine.

I remember 3 tracks. One was just amazing and really made for a great gameplay experience. I could spend 12 hours listening to that as i painstakingly chose between building a farm or a house...

More likely the opposite, bots, scripts and multis where more rampant when you played than its now. The cheating detection system is way more better and sofisticated as it is now.

Though some of my love of the game in bare guts is due to my tech ineptness, I come from pencil & paper gaming. Always curious about WW2 Eastern Front confrontations I look at the tactics from integrated unit formations. Fantastic races feed my D&D roots, and the script non-visual aspect is familiar from my years playing Starfleet Battles with paper copy SSD sheets and grease pencils.
I played Utopia when it first came out with several friends. I remember being an elf and being in a cool kingdom out the gate. I jumped to an absolutely Barbaric kingdom with no monarch that was fun for a short stint. I then finished the age with a noble kingdom that fought a larger kingdom and won. I've only recently come back to enjoy the game with much to discover. - Sega Genisis music from Master of Monsters would be a welcome addition. ;-)

Based on your description, StratOCastle, I believe you also felt the same quality in oldschool Utopia that I feel to be missing.

Granted, all text based games have a charm of their own by virtue of the fact they leave your imagination unbound. But there was another quality which only Utopia seemed to have. And I already had tons of gaming burnout and text based experience in general at that point so it was not a case of "everyone remembers their first love" nostalgia. There was an intrinsic subtratem to the Utopia universe.

Palem, you mentioned there have been different devs and coding thru the years- has there been some big transference of ownership since the days of olde?
