I live in the states and our international news is somewhat ... filtered? All I can find on the issue is that the government wanted to re-develop some parkland for another purpose and there has been a protest over it. There isn't much more information than that available here that I can find. Would you mind giving a summary?

I heard the protests was over a park ...

the park has been just the spark for the protests.. 150-200 ppl were sitting and reading books on the park for protesting the demolish project until the police intervened with excessive force using tear gas & water on those ppl.. that unhumane act has been the last drop and ppl couldnt take it anymore.. 150 ppl at start now grew into millions (no exaggeration) and standing against anti-democratic government, protecting freedom of thought, religion, lifestyle and whatever else you can think of.. there is a long background of separate events of dictatorship of the government which finally erupted into this massive civil protests.. you can find a lot more detailed info in the link ive given in my previous post..

none of the protestors are armed or fighting the polica, instead cleaning the streets and fields everyday after protests, reading poems, dancing and running to shelter when the police uses pepper bomb, tear gas and other chemical gases.. there are a very minor number of provocators trying to fight police but the civilians are throwing them out and keep their calm.. yet the police violance doesnt stop and ppl are dying, thousands are wounded..
