Best race/pers to start again with?

Haven't played in 8 years. Recommendations for good combinations?

    Faery Sage

    Edit:
If he was playing in a top kd he wouldn't be asking the forums what he should play lol

In which case, go for something fun! UD/Rogue would be a lot of fun I think

UD/Tact is popular for a reason. If you can be active, you'll have fun with it.

Dwarf tac provides a good toy chest:

1- you can go fast or faster if you want
2- you have cool spells, both defensive and offensive
    3- you have free build
4- you have zero loss intel: send 1 thief for 100% accuracy
5- you're not the most durable, but you can use speed to dodge ambush
6- your economy is very nice for an attacker
7- it works with high or average activity

So it gives you a chance to dabble in all phases of the game. You can cast fools gold, you can steal, you can build whatever you need for free. Drawback is food, but you can steal what you can't grow. Clear sight protects you from thieves. Mystic aura protects you from spells. It's easy to rebuild after war. You're solid in and out of war.

Last age was big for sages and I never had much problem with them in war. The attack times with QF let you tailor your attacks for your schedule while being effective. This also provides a forgiving environment to relearn the nuances.

easiest is to take an orc/tactician and go smack stuff. you're useful in most random kingdoms you'll land in and you have all of the important attacking bonuses, some useful defensive bonuses (CS+RM and your intel doesn't lose thieves) and a relatively minor penalty. the only problem is that you can't turtle so you're forced to send out often, but you would do that anyway given your +25% gains.

dwarf/cleric would be easy-mode as well but it isn't always a useful province, and lacks the immediate damage output of orc. it also took a nerf so it's not as good as it was last age, and it has a nagging food penalty which can be annoying in ghettoland.

would stay away from undead (too many drawbacks to know it will be good), human (requires effective pumping to work, and is just not that strong this age), avian (lacks the offense to hit really useful targets, better to just pick orc/tactician for speed), or any of the t/m provinces (not guaranteed to be useful, t/m ops in ghetto are nowhere near full effectiveness and most low-tier kingdoms would fill their t/m slots at start of age with their more experienced players).

easy personalities are tactician for orc, undead, and human, warrior for avian, cleric for dwarf, or merchant for any of those except human. you can use orc/warrior or undead/warrior but without an organized kingdom, the extra offense isn't worth as much as it should be - with warrior you need to assure that the extra offense or the extra general are useful as often as possible, and in low-tier kingdoms that don't optimize their offensive output that happens a lot less. if you find yourself oversending way too often just to get elites out, then warrior winds up being largely a waste.

would stay away from traps like dwarf/tactician (too weak for offensive output and doesn't have stellar defense or economy), avian or orc/cleric (there are better ways to sustain offense during the periods where it is actually useful, and merchant is better for long wars and better outside of war), or undead/merchant (undead economy sucks bad). avian/tactician is not too good this age either since you already have CS, and the speed is difficult to use without a clear plan worked out with your kingdom.
