I played this game like 15 years ago, and remember starting with 72 hours of protection. I have now started again, 6-8 hours ago, and only have 19 hours of protection left? Is this the way it's supposed to be?

Protection is 24 hours now. Not sure exactly since which age though.
I believe it is for 3/4 ages now. It absolutely stimulates the action at the start! When you did not have this the 'top' kingdoms (or what is left of them) had way too much of an advantage during that 72 hour period.
It was changed back in age 60
