nothing has really changed in over 5 years, so I can't really see it growing any
there needs to be a little change here and there and some a marketing strategy set up. but the ones that run the place don't want that. So I wouldn't look at anything positive happening
The hasn't changed in 5 years? Didn't they change morale, several different Raes and a few different Personalities? Surely it shall be altered, at least in some ways, in say ... another five years. I am hoping for the inclusion of more troop types for each race.

Too dedicated core of players to die out in the near future, but the game will probably diminish slowly.

I don't think there needs to be much change apart from the game needs more players. Which means a better marketing strategy (if there is one) and availability towards smart phones.
We should just sign it over to Scott, and in a few months we'd have 500k players, 12 servers, and billions of dollars.

Who is Scott and why is he so skilled at marketing? I am not sure that i would want that many players!?! The game lags and 'stutters' at Age changeover with just 7k players.

The future of gaming is social gaming. Nearly all major success stories in the gaming world have social components to them, whether it's Zynga and their 'ville game success, online shooting games (COD, Battlefield, Halo) or competitive sports games (Madden, FIFA). Utopia has been stifled for years simply because there are limited channels to grow the game - there is no easy integration with an established hub or network to get people to play the game more. How did Farmville become one of the most successful games of the past decade (by number of players) and drive Zynga's valuation through the roof? They got the players to be marketers by giving incentives to have players recruit other players and retain their activity.
I know that the game is largely private funded, but in order to see rapid growth, there needs to be both integration with social networks and incentives to bring in new players. The revenue model that I'm seeing here (and it's extremely limited) is largely based around player payments for things, since ads can't possibly be driving revenue to make this game self-sufficient. The players should be the product, not the revenue source. If the game is able to sustain growth and player base, the advertising alone will pay for it.
If Utopia's going to survive, you're probably going to see a few key changes. First, people will be integrating accounts with identity services features - think Facebook or Google+ logins on other sites. The biggest place you'll see that impact is the forums, since people are much more honest and personable without their anonymity. Kingdom sizes will shrink, as the game encourages players to recruit and play with their real friends instead of random strangers, making it easier to fill your kingdom with people you know instead of random people you find in recruiting threads on the forums. Incentives will be put in place to encourage people to bring their friends on board, which will inevitably impact gameplay - it may start with just free sitting credits for bringing in friends, but you'll see power users getting incentives to bring in lots of friends (extra monarchy votes, access to exclusive in-game target finders, etc.). There will be a coordinated effort to make the game less of a 24/7 endeavor at the highest levels, since that's wholly unrealistic for casual gamers.
If they're able to pull off these four things, you'll see significant growth in player volume. Whether or not they ever make it to this level of support and growth remains to be seen (after all, that's a TON of effort to support around 7,000 players a month), but it's the clearest path to success for the game. The 1000th most used application on Facebook still sees 20,000 Daily Average Users (http://www.appdata.com/leaderboard/a...=25&start_date[day]=9&start_date[month]=1&start_date[year]=2012), which would represent a three-fold increase over our current player base. On the other hand, at its most popular, Utopia was up around 130,000 users across two servers, putting it around 300th for apps on Facebook (http://www.appdata.com/leaderboard/a...e=8&start_date[day]=9&start_date[month]=1&start_date[year]=2012). If the game was able to make it that high without the support social networks provide, there's certainly room to grow, it's just a matter of making it.
Best case, the game integrates with Facebook, sees a userbase revival and receives significant venture capital funding as the developers leverage this success to fund other efforts. Worst case, the game stays as is and treads water as other games fly by.

Doubt that would end up being utopia that we all love and cherish. Majority of people arent willing to spend time needed and if its dulled down it becomes boring for the dedicated ones. But sure is a solid suggestion :P
