The devs have made a decision to kill competitive utopia and have thereby killed my interest with it.
This isn't even realistic though.
If a kingdom is being seiged, the peasants will be starving long before anyone of importance. This has always been a truth.

Historically speaking, intellectuals weren't/aren't considered people of great importance. The same isn't so in utopia. Science and scientists are very important and valuable to us as leaders. It makes sense that they'd be included as important figures that are protected from the nights of common people
Realistically at 0 food, everyone should starve. Between 0 and 1000 food, only peasants should starve, as the scarce food is funnelled to the more valuable society members. I'd be interested is seeing food be a little more dynamic...
You aren't 0 food, though, just eating more than you are producing. In the great famine, the king of England had trouble finding food for his courtly lifestyle but there was no question of him, or a leading Earl, starving.
