There is no spoon: in other words, the only reasoning is doing what you want. diplomacy is a time sink in which each party would be best served simply saying "blah,blah, blah" to each other till the oven timer dings. It's only there to occupy egos and has no impact on game actions.
Edit: I do however encourage you to annoy people who deserve it.
