Im far from an evolutionary expert but didn't simians evolve from a common ancestor to homo sapiens instead of simians evolving into homo sapiens?

Humans are a member of simians. So it doesn't make any sense to say humans and simians evolved from a common ancestor. Humans evolved from a long line of simian species that eventually traces back to the original simians.

Well, to be completely fair, while his technical terms were off, his point is correct. Humans didn't come from any sort of ape you'd find living in a zoo, and Simians typically identified themselves as those kinds of apes.
