Hi Ben. I live in Austin, TX the party capital of the world.
My brother owns a tow truck company.
We get wrecks like yours weekly Sometimes 2x a week.
Working at such a place one gets conditioned to blood, guts, brains and destroyed vehicles with horrible stories included.
    Most, not all include alcohol.
Wake up after slumber and say out loud.. Thank you for my life.

[this need not be religious, if you are agnostic, say it to the cosmos]

EDIT: I dont know you Ben but you have almost always been nice in the forum. I love you and am happy you and driver survived.

I rolled myself out onto the side of a hill with a quad a few years ago, fractured my spine as well. I ended up needing fusion from L3-T12, and I had to learn to walk again, starting from only being able to move my toes and with a bit of action at the ankles.

I am not as flexible as I used to be, and I do have some atrophy in specific muscles in my one leg that I don't think will ever make the nerve reconnection now that it has been a couple of years since my accident, as well as weakness/stiffness in other parts of my legs/feet (my toes curl or my leg cramps up more often now than they had in the past), and some localized loss of sense(I can feel hot/cold, but not the difference between sharp and blunt in one spot on my thigh), generally associated with the weak spots. For the most part loss of sensation isn't a big deal for me, I get a good laugh when I bang my knee off something now and people around me wince like ahh did that hurt? Puny mortals...

That being said I still do just about everything I did before, some things I just have to do a bit differently. I still ride 4x4, I hike, canoe (including distance portages), I work around my house, and I still play sports, although I have cut out contact sports like hockey or rugby. I believe I could play these for the most part, but at the same time there is lots of opportunity for fluke twisting, bending, etc that I don't really want to subject myself to if I don't have to.

My advice would be to remove yourself from painkillers as early as possible so that you can get the **** to work. The sooner you can start, the better. Once I was able to get myself in a wheelchair, and sitting upright didn't trigger nausea/loss of consciousness, I did essentially 3 months of hitting the gym at rehab 3 times a day(at least one session was yoga), 5 days a week. Every day was 'leg day'(every day is also 'arm day' when you are in a wheelchair), starting on my back with my ankle in a glider and just trying to lift my knee, with assistance, until eventually I was doing hundreds of squats each day.

    GL with your recovery

tldr; Modern medical science is a wonder, and if you put in the effort you will be rewarded... but your body will never let you forget, although yoga helps

PS My socialist country's healthcare system may not be perfect, but without this system I would either have had inferior care/recovery, or my family would have been financially broken by this... I always appreciated this about my homeland, but when you see firsthand what it takes to care for sick/injured people, it really puts into perspective the value of a publicly funded system where me and all my neighbours pitch in together, hoping none of us ever actually needs to tap into this investment, but preparing for the possibility that we do. Thanks everyone!
