Sure that is a valid concern, which is why we're taking other steps to allow us more focus on those important things (adding moderators so our presence is not required as much).
The fact remains that our primary focus is always going to be on the development and enjoyability of the game itself. In the meantime we want to offer other things for the existing playerbase to enjoy!

While I begrudgingly semi-agree with Korp, there should be caution about branching out in too many directions from a shaky base, this is one idea that does not suffer from that concern. Merch is line of sight and line of sight is interest and interest is at least getting players in the door. There may be a split between "this game is not ready to be advertised to the masses" and "this game is good enough and is only improving every age" but I think the former camp is mostly old vets who still can't let go of the way things used to be. The latter camp should gain more traction in the coming year as the game evolves into something better (which it has proven to be doing).
