Talking NEED CLARIFICATION - Night Strike Formula

I don't know a variable in NS formula:

Optimal Thieves to Send = (Opponents' Resources * Max % Of Total) / Gains Per Thief / Racial Mod
Is it the number of soldiers, or total army (soldiers + specs + leets)? I assumed peasants don't count, although they help defending but NS doesn't kill peasants right?

The explanation below from utopia wiki doesn't make sense:

Kills up to a maximum of 13% enemy soldiers at a rate of 0.67 soldiers per thief. Also kills a much smaller amount of specialists and elites. Will affect all troops, even those that aren't home.
What if my target has no soldiers? If I follow the utopia wiki definition, my max damage will be 0 (because target has no soldiers).
What number should I use to represent the "Opponents' Resources" in the formula?

Years playing attackers I am now assigned for a hybrid, I am confused with this. LOL
    Really appreciate your help guys.

First, I hope you got help somewhere.

You might try searching the strategy forum and asking players in the top tiers. Most of the conversations are going on in discord I understand.

I'm not a formula guy, I just try and see my results.

    Good luck.

And yeah, you don't kill peasants.

In short, it's complicated and not worth calculating. It may have changed the last time it was touched but, historically, "opponents resources" had to be considered for each "stack" of troops. A "stack" is the home or away portion of a specific unit type. Each unit type has it's own "maximum amount" and individual "thief capacity" by which your number of thieves to send is calculated. There was also a reduction for away armies but that has since been reduced or removed. As one stack is saturated, additional thieves may still be needed to reach the maximum for another stack, so it really depends what you're targeting. I don't seem to have my notepad with the specific numbers but someone probably does.

Realistically, you'll be best served by just feeling your way to the proper send amount. Just start lower and work your way up until the increase in kills levels off, or look at your bot logs and see what the last person sent as a starting point.

I think the highest efficiency comes with sending arround 35% of your thieves or it might be just what worked for me on occasion where I tried to ns, sending more will kill more, but if you fail the loses will also be higher, so not really worth the risk at a certain point.

The wiki states that Nightstrike Kills up to a maximum of 13% enemy soldiers at a rate of 0.67 soldiers per thief.

And that other troops die at a much lower rate. I'd estimate the % for other troops to be somwhat below 2% for troops at home and less still if away, but it is just my eyeballing and more likely than not some might actually have the real numbers, I've mostly been on the recieving ends as I normally play attacker, and I haven't asociated with top kingdoms who probably got a few people who could give the exact math amongst them.

I believe that optimal range will also affect those numbers, so if your nw is much higher or much lower effect will be lower.

Running no elites and getting my military ns'ed for most of last war I lost arround 1/3 or was it 2/3 def specs to ns while the off specs lost feelt rather insignificant compared to what was lost on attacks, perhaps 1/3 or 1/4 the rate of troops at home.

NS of course should not be the only way to deal with an opponent, you ns so that you can break a specific target, or so that you can break that target twice with all of your core players or so that you scare them into training defense only, you create targets or distract the opponents from what they really should be doing in a war situation.
Furthermore I think Carthage should be destroyed and Dryads brought back to the game

Octo is very succinct here and pretty on the money.

I would say it's worth over sending a little if you have thief loss reduction, otherwise undersending to preserve your thieves is more important than getting max returns.

If you got 20 ops to NS, you should be able to narrow into a very small range of best gains within 4 successes. It's really simply.

I'm just a brawler with a soft spot; octo, Madchess and Bananamancer know this game a lot deeper than I do. Octo knew exactly what would happen when protection was switched from 72 to 24 ticks several ages ago. His knowledge spans dimensions above the game.
