are they worth a while to build in the beginning to explore early on?
thinking of running with avian/cleric

10% farm
20% bank
20% arms
20% mills
15% guild
5% tower

I think is better to build another 15% banks and 5% to put where you want. Explore, and at 40-36 hours before OOP switch 20% mills to arms and build your army.
Is the 24 hours logout bonus still around nowadays?
Mills are not worth it if you only explore the initial 125 (duh, the build costs are low anyway, and you *need* buildings built at the start to make enough jobs). If you plan to oop at 1k+ acres, (and are not dwarf) you will *need* mills. Somewhere in between is where they stop being worth it.
I would guess, as a rule of thumb, that you don't want them if ooping below 700, and can probably manage fine up to 800 though they might help by then.
it's vs. its is ambiguous - from now on I'm attempting to use the proper possessive it's, and the contraction 'tis. (Its will just be the plural.)
Think Different
Mills are worth it from 250 acres exploring or so. But you gotta wait with exploring until your mills are in of course, you get some extra military out of it at the cost of wizzies most likely. (At least thats the case for my set-up according to sim-sheet)
Not worth it.It cost you more to built mill and raze it later then just explore . I mean,if you are not explorer you dont need it.Building 30-50% guild is better to pump wizzy and paradise, you dont need to raze guild just make its percent goes down when you get big.
Scenario above only applied if you are not land whore kd.
i am not using mills myself, to me they are just wasted acres such as armouries, i would rather use those acres for banks, i think mills are only good for people planning to explore 400-500acres while still in protection, that is not the road i have taken so i shan't be using them.
