Why has Merchant crept up as the personality of choice over Sage recently?

merchant and sage are really 1a/1b if you mean for a core personality. It depends on your kingdom goal for which one works better. In ghettos, you can't beat sage imo (I play one) but if you want to compete, merchant is just too good.

But why is merch too good? I just don't get it. I would imagine that a good sage player can maintain 20% income science pretty easily. Then you account for all the other science categories and stack that up against Merchant and merch just seems to get pummeled. Even if you account for the science that Merchant can build up, not only do they need more of it but it can get stripped away pretty easily, at least compared to a Sage.

Double banks man, on top of the default + income %.

Sage can't compete with that, even if you max out your alchemy science absurdly high!

Merchant has been the personality of choice at the top at least for every age since merchant got their doubly effective banks.

The entire game at the top is based on who gets off to the fastest start. If you're larger you make more income, if you make more income you make more troops, if you have more troops you take their land. Merchant gets off to the fastest start. Not only is it a 50% income boost compared to sage, but sage is spending its money on sciences just to get to the level to compete, so Merchant likely has double the income with which to train troops with early.

So the sage kingdoms have to stay less than half the merchant kingdoms' size not to get farmed by the merchants, putting them in range early of the warring/waving kingdoms which further hurts their growth.

Next thing you know, merchants are triple the size and it doesn't matter if Sage can beat them 1/1 a few weeks later, because they're no longer in networth range of them.

At this point in the age, I'd much rather be a sage kingdom fighting an equally sized merchant kingdom. But if you're a good merchant kingdom you're double the size of a sage kingdom by now.

money is good for max gains. Sage is good to build up for max gains, however, build up takes too long. Potential is great, but investment is too high esp in a small game.

I've warred Merchant kingdoms. When pumped their income is insane and even when FB'ed their income is still acceptable.
The only issue is that the majority of the kingdoms tend to hit a cap on their potential. They don't have the activity/discipline to compete with the bigger kingdoms and therefore will hit a wall. They can pump all that extra money into science but it'll make them learn farms unless they run 30% Schools. A Merchant kd where the 50% of the Merchants have to wait on the rest (which happens in average kingdoms) will most likely get the top 50% of that kingdom farmed. Then mid-age they get overtaken by other personalities (definitely Sage, possibly Cleric)

thats why i said it depends on your age goals. For inactives and ghettos (like myself), Sage is very good.

every age has its +/-. Can't remember what the races were like for each age but obviously I pick the races I feel are the strongest.
