I am also someone who used to play many years ago and am now trying to get back into the game. We are at the 27 hours before OOP right now and I am starting my D Spec pump. I have explored to 1000 acres, which I have now learned may have been a bad move, but regardless, what should my defensive situation look like? I have already trained ~1600 and plan to do more, but what should my DPA look like OOP?

Furthermore, as the age progresses, what should my DPA be more in line with? Thanks folks! Also, I am a UD/Tactician as well.

    ^^

You are totally screwed and there is nothing you can do. The rule of thumb is - the less you know how to play the smaller you should be. You will be hit several times OOP and from there you should sit and pump up your army.

you should probably train as many dspecs as you can at this point and maybe you won't lose too much land. actually you're probably just screwed because no one will be afraid of hitting you if you can't retal.

Stop training defense and train as much offense as you can. You're gonna get hit so you might as well make hits, too.

Well, not the news I was hoping to hear, but I suppose we learn from our mistakes. If my estimations are correct, I should have a little over 3,000 dspecs by the time I am OOP, hopefully more, which will have me with 12,000 defense plus whatever soldiers I still have laying around. I was hoping this would provide me with enough protection to defend attacks.

For future reference, what should my target DPA be OOP, and also as the age progresses? Thanks

Did I do something wrong? I just barely employed all of my peasants at 800 acres.

The guys up above that said you should STOP Training Defense now are CORRECT.
    You should concentrate on OFFENSE.
You are already going to take hits.
So you need to be able to hit.

dpa is not as important as raw defense.

assume that anyone who comes out with offense oop is going to come out with 12-15k at least, and possibly higher. You would need about 30k defense oop to be relatively safe, but a suicidal human or dorf will be able to break you no matter what.

i'd aim for around 7-8k defense oop, rest offense. this prevents people with minimal offense from doubling you, but leaves enough space for offense that allows you to dt pure suiciders. You should have at least 1 offspec for every defspec that you train, unless your total raw offense winds up being too low to be useful. You should be able to train 4000 specs with any reasonable protection strat, and probably closer to 5000. Though it's a bit late to do it now, ponies are not bad for getting extra raw offense for oop.

Also note that TW is your best friend for oop. ^_^

I appreciate the advice guys. Unfortunately I read a lot of starter strats that told me to wait til 20-30 hrs before OOP before training military. Would you recommend for future ages that I start training military from the beginning while also exploring more modestly? Thanks

no you should never train military before 19 hours pre-oop, paying wages on troops is a waste of money.

I usually wake up 24 hours before OOP, just in case IA screws me. The upkeep is not that big a deal if you train a few ticks early, but IA is still useful.

essentially yes. you need to make sure you start drafting solds at a reasonable time thou. 23rd jan with no explore and ~2 extra ticks later per 100 acres you explore is always a reasonable assumption.

plz don't go all defence.... you can run zero def oop as long as you hit for land GBP will provide you all the defence you need to convert off specs into leets without losing much land, its far better than having no offense atleast -.-

if you plan on keeping those acres, ensure you almost exclusively build guardstations with the first land you get incoming from oop attack.
