It's also the case that most provinces aren't really untouchable. People give up on them too soon. One province is rarely truly untouchable (fireball with the whole kigndom at 5% success rate is usually possible), but when it's 2-10 provinces they certainly can be.

I Went into the war with 50 opa due to 1 week of hostile vs Simians.
I was getting hit 3 times a day for 1 week by simians and I hit them twice a day to be able to keep my land. My Acres was always building and I had to recive food aid many times due to lack of farms.
And my prov arrived mid age so I had very bad science.
Yes we did beat a messed up kd thats true.
But also many of our provs arrived mid age and were far behind in science.
Many of us enterd into war with low opa just as siminans did
So we had some advantage for sure but not as big as many belive.
I hope maybe sometime we can have a re-match.

EDIT: And Nick_Mi plus Jdorje wondered why the FBs worn off. You try to cast FB with massacred T/Ms into a bank. 10-20% success rate in the end of war. MSh is broken and so is range and randomness in spells. The reason we stopped trying with FB for some time was because we NMed down two 1 mill nw targets. Which gave some effect instead of fizzle 8-9/10 spells on the bank.
