So turn a game that's lasted for 19 years into p2p at a time when it's player base is the lowest ever and you're attempting to attract new blood to this 19 year old game?
Yeah you're a ****ing idiot.

soo...Dave = Hawk?
Utopia Enhancer's (browser extension by chadde) implementation of the sidebar and data overlays, which make relevant as well as contextual information glanceable is exactly the kind of functionality Utopia needs. Though some may hold fast to what is familiar, the learning curve for new players is made that much more difficult simply because of poor design. The current system of navigating pages within the game for bits of information is a much more cumbersome process than actually playing the game. The more elements that can be logically arranged, the better.
Utopia is in dire need of current standards based development with its UI as well as an API developers can interface with. Development of an API is of particular importance as it is key to the overall longevity and scaleability of the Utopia platform. Android/iOS apps, browser extensions, as well as sites like Munk's and UpoOpu are a step in the right direction with the additional accessibility, tactical information, and functionality they add to the game but the current system of parsing whole HTML pages for bits of data is inefficient and unnecessarily increases server loads.
Whatever the path forward Dave and Jeff decide to take, hopefully it'll be community focused and driven. May they develop Utopia into a platform that utilizes the talents of its loyal core base of users and encourages the development of value added content for all.
I was on a timeline before we started to record. Please feel free to continue to post questions here and I'll endeavor to ask them on the show in the future
Lets call the new owners with name we all know insted plz !!! Zauper and Hawk !
Bro utopia succeded 19 years ago when peeps had landline /modem inet and since then its been on a steady fall. Nowadays only the old players play this game and the new players are old players returning to the game. I mean..how many 18-19-20 year old guys you see in this game who play it for the 1st time and actually stay in ? Not alot. Its unattractive according to current game standards. I agree with you on pay to play. If i have to pay i wont play ( which is main reason i dont play other crappy online games where u cannot compete with others who pay and get their stuff built /trained 10x faster)
That is why I didnt mention strictly being pay to play, most people buy credits every age to set sitting. If you pay $5 to play, and also get $5 worth of sitting credits, it ensures a steady cash injection to the game, while also giving sitting credits to people anyway, encouraging them to use the extra features the game uses.
Most people's arguments that I'm reading are about ways to improve the game, and things they want done for improvements. Improvements take time and money to accomplish. The vast majority of people left in this game are not people that would shy away at giving a lot of their time and some of their money to this game.
People donate to munk because he keeps implementing useful things into his tools.. People don't shy away from giving him money to enhance their experience.
It really depends what demographic they want to aim for.. most of us started playing in junior high and high school, so at the time free to play made sense. But now, most of the main player base has jobs and disposable income. I'm sure they would be OK giving some of that away if they knew it would really help enhance their experience, like the production of a good usable app etc.
I don't know what FS has done to you in the past, but i don't appreciate the attitude. We are adults here.
Pay to play = bad
Pay to overthrow Palem = interesting
Yay! The Jewking <3
You are at the very core of the forum problem ben's podcast mentioned Pillz.
Worst kind of person.
...
Utopia's strength is its complexity imo. Breaking the initial barrier and introducing the game mechanics and strategies to new users is an issue, lack of graphics isnt.
I am not saying there are no ui improvements possible that would help breach initial barrier that would include shiny grahical solutions. I am simply stating dumbing the game to meet current standards is not solution.
No ofc not. I didnt mean to change how utopia works. Utopia is a unique game where you constantly learn things.Just make it more visually attractive to new guys enough to hook em or make em interested in finding more about utopia.
I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with some of our competitors, but they seem to have some UI improvements we could benefit from. Something to look into.
yeah ****** would of been a better purchase game mechanics are so broke there tho and no real competion i feel the one who crown over and over there are top player from utopia!
Assess until the cows come home.
Pointing people in the direction of a utopia knockoff won't be tolerated
Keep pretending they don't exist or that we have nothing to learn from them. I've edited, hopefully to your approval, Sir Palem.
Who's pretending they don't exist? Lots of utopia clones out there. There's no reason to tell people to go check them out. K? Cool, let's be friends now

more about the ownership would have been interesting. is the rumor true that zauper and hawk made the purchase? what is the cost to purchase a dying game such as utopia? if they are not the owners. how about a little background what where they may have played, fav kds, ages, alliance and in-game nic etc.
Let's be realistic. Fogtopia is running something that has taken players who used to play in Utopia. If any understanding of 'why' could be reached that would bring those players back, that would not be a bad thing at all. Players don't buzz off to play a clone unless there is a damn strong push/pull factor.
As for new players, although the thought of agreeing with Pillz over something makes me feel well dodgy, I have to do it. New players do still enter the game and some even stay. The likelihood of staying will be heightened if friendly tool tips and a guide exist.
I think jmiedema is right, reducing kd sizes just means that the less productive members in each kd will be booted out and they will not have the skills or interest to build kds. Leadership is a drag.
Also I think that making any sweeping changes is not a great idea, the last thing Uto needs is a misjudged change that reduces the player base further. I still believe that allowing invites contributed to the long term diminishment of the game. Uto is primarily a social team game anywhere but at the top end or in vicious kingdoms, and part of the charm was making unexpected new friends from unexpected places.
I really do hope the new owners have spent a good amount of time in lower level but well functioning kingdoms, because that is where any player growth will be IMO so changes need to be made with a large eye on that playerbase, and this element is usually completely ignored as most of those players don't come anywhere near this forum. This forum is mostly just an echo chamber and I have zero idea how it could be revitalised, which it needs to be if the owners really want to attract new players.
Podcast - Benjamin, it's great you are putting energy into producing this, sorry to criticise but maybe you could consider finding someone to assist you as a presenter who has a more engaging style/presence? I find your podcasts very, very hard going to be honest, like sitting through the Powerpoint from Hell at work. Although you might feel this is a cruel comment, it is constructive criticism, and it could be the reason your first podcast had 1500 views, and the subsequent ones not so much.
The ripoff sucks and is played by like 200 plauers with 3 competitive kds (why they still p2w is a mystery to me). If utopia goes down that road I will quit immediately without regrets
TIL Make topia p2w and Bart leaves....
I wont ever leave this game no matter what. #sparta4life
Will dark elves come back seeing as the majority of the server wants them
