The truth about the right is that they're crazy. Crazy reps for crazy constituents. Sure there are some exceptions, but the Republican party appeals to bible-thumping, gun-toting, uneducated lunatics.
Republicans are losing control because religion is losing control. Finally people have started to realize what lunatics they are when they say things like "God told me to run for President", and "God would prevent pregnancy in a rape victim if he wanted to". Bible-thumping no longer wins an election by itself, there are real life issues to face and intelligent people recognize that. The religious nutbags are still a force to be reckoned with and aren't going away for some generations to come, but their hold on government is waning.
For example, nutbags like Todd Akin, now thankfully removed from the House and failed his bid for Senate:
"Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."
