Still no one posting in Redemption lol.
think what you like. ;)
I didn't care if you left. It would have been nice if you stayed. That's all I meant. Everything is a test.
Darlok. Sounds good to me. the island layout does not really concern me too much :)
Geco, check your messages. :)
in NZ it's me-ssages. :)
So your in New Zealand now? Maybe you should come visit me Its only a three-four hour flight from here to north island of NZ lol
not yet. will be in late december. will be staying there for a year.
We are starting our trip in 2 weeks. We'll be landing in china at Beijing, staying in china for about 3 weeks, doing beijing, Xian, guilin, hong kong, macau, anywhere else we can think of. Crossing the border to Vietnam and going down the coast; most notably we are going to Ha Long bay. Cambodia next, to see Angkor Wat. After that, probably Singapore (don't forget, if you are a gum chewer, that it is a cane-able offense to chew gum, no matter what nationality you are or country you come from). Then we're moving down to Darwin, then Sydney, then to Auckland.
If you're in Sydney, let me know. It might be possible.
Was the forum down for much of the day, as was the case for me? I couldn't access any Jolt forum, and saw no information pertaining to downtime. This brought to light the idea of a contingency plan... some rendezvous point for wayward RPers in case Utopia finds itself spontaneously on the cutting room floor..
sorry, haven't been able to post in a while. my schedule is killing me right now. but I'l still here... will post something by the end of the week :(
@Ren nah I'm in north Queensland lol, but my dad lives there I might visit him for X-mas lol wno knows yet, but if I am I will let you know.....
phoenix -
Cutting room floor idea: Yeah, I tried that. Jolt beat me out, but I did have a good amount of people and threads for a little while. URP was getting outdated on the old forum. barely moving. though more than now, I suppose.
It's definitely an idea I wouldn't mind pursuing again, though I wouldn't want to be the only one to take on the task like last time. i did all the forum work and made a few people rogue mods in case I wasn't around and someone spammed the boards. Aside from that... I was it.
But yes. I would like to eventually move these boards away from Jolt and the uncertainty of it all. I was hoping that after yesterday's downtime I wouldn't come home from work today and find it all gone, actually. Thankfully, it's still here. But I don't think for long.
SoHee - take your time, time hasn't moved much.
all - Anyone seen Geco? Haven't seen him online or on the boards in days.
I don't understand the appeal of lurking... seems like a waste of time =P
Please do explain for me.
where ya been dude?
I've seen him online plenty.
hmm. I must just be on at the wrong times. I don't see you on either phoenix. btw, did you get my email? what's your msn? email or PM me.
I lurk, but that's only cause there is not anything on here that appeals to me RPwise
I don't see how anything here is unappealing if you're interested in a fantasy setting. These threads can be anything you want them to be. Geco's thread, for instance, is by his own words completely open to our influence. His only request was that we keep his master plot in mind when developing our own. So far, he's given us a overall idea of why we are where we are, but the island we're stranded on, the names of the places we're created and even the design of the airship itself was completely open-ended.
While I think there should a tad bit more structure (*cough cough*) the idea of a moldable world is that it can be whatever you want. If you want a thread about massive battles or politics or whatever else, I can assure you - with the proper thought applied to your posts - it has room in this thread. Just because the main story is about Gabriel's Solomon's quest to find Shandalaar(sp?) that doesn't mean we can't have other things outside of that scope going on. After all, it would be a sadly short story if we got off the island and landed in Shandalaar the next day.
I think we, as writers and storytellers, have a responsibility to make our characters interesting and make them fit in the story. This goes for everyone. You can't rely on the others to make a world for you. We are busy with our own goals for the story (at least me and Phoenix are). That's not to say we aren't willing to be part of what you have planned, but we won't necessarily create the ideal environment for you or not attempt to incorporate our own plans into yours. That's why communication is so vital out of character via PM, e-mail or whatever else. Integration and adaptation over imposition and seclusion. Trust me, if you master the ability to insert your story elements into the main arch and allow them to work with the efforts of the others, threads like this stand a very good chance of not only lasting longer than a month, but staying interesting and keeping a good mix of drama, action, and in some cases mystery.
I'm very pleased with what I've seen from [/i]Skysail[/i] so far. As an editor, I can see things other people may not and how they can relate to other goings-on in the story. Everyone made a character with a detailed history and goals for the future. Looking at my character - and doing a bit of critical thinking - I can place Cyradis in just about any situation and still think of a way her personality and history can influence how she reacts and thinks under said situation. That alone shows me room enough for a seperate thread for each character. Knowing that, there should never be a period when this thread looses the ability to accept new elements.
With a single post, I can change the face of Skysail entirely, much like I did with its prequel, Endless Skies. In that case, I'm afraid I exerted too much control and caused the master story to be overwritten, and it was because while writing about Zayna and Reteban I forgot about Shari and therefore how she was affecting Geco's plot.
The point I'm trying to make (in far too many words) is that anyone here is capable, from what I've seen, to make influences on a story without overshadowing the main plot while leading events away from it. I can elaborate with examples if anyone is curious as to how I could introduce a brand new character that had no place in the thread, but for the sake of this post being huge, I'll cut it off here.\
If anyone wants a, example, consult or help working out a entrance or integrating something into the story, I'll answer any PMs here usually the same day they are sent.
not to pick Shari, but I notice that you miss the use of "an" a lot.feel free to pick on me sometime too. ^_^ I always want to fix my recurring grammatical errata.Quote:
... So far, he's given us a overall idea of why we are where we are, but the island...
and that whole side story is exactly why i left endless skies.
that and while i endure a little of a premature character and plot development (and dabble in it myself) for the sake of pushing a story along and keeping its interest (after all, it could be a week and only a couple posts are put up), often times, fellow writers here, including myself, take it way too prematurely and there is nothing else left to do but end the thread. not that the story has finished, but they hit the middle-limbo. the area that it is too soon to finish, but too close to the beginning to give anything away.
I hate that point. It means that structure is severely lacking.
-------
I wish you were around for Freedom and Fate, Shari. You would have loved it. :) This style is where Geco got it, I think.
Geco, Arkady, and myself were the main pushers of the thread. Another guy name Archmage came and tried to hijack the thread. When that didn't work, he left, and when he did it stopped. He had so many characters, like everyone in the thread, that it died. It was a massive, but wonderful, undertaking.
I really wish it could have come to completion.
--------
One more thing, let's not complicate the story with anymore characters or groups. Three groups with a few characters and its own story each is enough.
However, I think you should send a flare for help to the ship or something. *nod* 3 vs 2-dozen is not really... eh. fun to read? sort of envokes the feeling of "please... Really?"
if you want an idea of things I have planned, cause I do have a couple ideas of something that I ran past Geco for Cyradis, let me know. he said he felt it was generally where he was going to take it. so. I'll ask you if that's where YOU want to take it. :)
yeah. :)
Well to be honest the overall idea of the threads have no appealed to me. I'm fickle on what I like, and if it doesn't interest me to begin with then being moldable (which I lurve) no longer matters, you know?
I dunno as far as fantasy, I'm kinda iffy. Sci-fi an alternate modern/post-modern are my faves usually
I think we all hope that about you fiz. :)
Geco, the 5am you get used to. the 5 pm just drags you down.
phoenix - indeed. :) invent an escape route (you're hours ahead of my group so far). You can even use my initial native squad leader if you wish. Although, I would prefer it if you do this after the discussion with grandfather pu'aki, or whatever it was I had down.
Hmmm this thread is more active than skysail its self......
Ummm Geco did you get my PM.......
@fiz still don't see the point of lurking........it just seems boring. Unless you do some writing else where?
You know, it's funny you should quote that, Ren, because I specifically remember changing that to 'an' before I hit submit... and I don't really mess up the use of 'a' and 'an' much at all. Normally, I'll mispell their as thier because it's a stupid word that doesn't follow normal grammar syntax - like 40% of the rest of the english language.
Also, Phoenix and I are significantly ahead of Geco and yourself (almost half a day). We're trying to pace ourselves and allow some of our characters' inner working to shine through. That and Vagrant is having some time issues and it would be unfair to leave him without a chance for at least a little input while we are ahead.
zed - fiz writes in his head on the stone tablet with a stylus and hammer.
You know me too well. :P Most of these scenarios play out in my head during class, or work when I've got the music going. Stick with me longer. Just that working on a computer doesn't make me wanna come home and type on one for all that long. Sucks since I at least TRY not to be a dick and come up with 2-3 posts I can make after I say I'm joining somebody's threads. Figure that'll work itself out eventually though.
why does no one ever post on the weekends? i find it's the best time to get on, and theres nothing to do here >.<
I noticed too. I dunno why... I like to think it's because we're all busy living our lives... but clearly that's not it ^_-
It's because that's when all the stores re-shelf their supply of writers talent. Sometimes I have to stand in line all day just to get a little. Darn stuff sells out SO FAST!!!!!
in my case. I'm seeing everyone that I am going to not see and the weekends are mostly it. This weekend I went to Orlando and saw my grandmother. *shrug* getting close. only 2 weeks left. Geco, you might want to play arlen how you want while i'm traveling.
sorry guys, I'll try to get a post up soon!
Right there with ya, Sohee.
Geco, Darlok - I'm turning this into a solo effort the more (or rather less) this goes on. JUMP IN AND DO SOMETHING! please? it isn't as much fun.
sorry guys, having hard time finding time, the usual excuse, but I know it's bad and I need to curb this quickly
that said, seems we've lost quite a few people, was bound to happen, but that's what makes it more fun for those that stay and stick it out
jumping presently ^_-
Hey all, glad to see you're all still here! Just lurking around and seeing what you're all up to. Time and sleep are such commodities these days; there're so many ideas bouncing around, so many activities to attend, and so many possibilities to lead to, but so little time. The full on burn of a 4 year university has been kicking for 4 weeks now, now that I've actually transferred to one and I'm started to really understand what busy means 8S. Ren, about old posts; 2003 doesn't seem all that long ago, when it's been 6 years and I still have many of my god horrendous writing from Epic of a Lone Mage. Don't you remember your early posts back when the URP was still in its prime? Makes you wonder what you were thinking back then, what made you write what you wrote, and what level your writing skills were ;).
I have none of my old posts, but at the same time I know how far I've come since those days *shudder* Every character I made in the beginning was like, "How can I make this guys uber powerful and give really cool skills and sword names," and then I remember how I'd be disappointed when people didn't comment on that, thinking, "Why don't they think it's cool?" Of course, I now realize it's because while it can be cool, it has to be done in the proper context ^_^
I'm also not sure when this happened for me, but the change from cool characters to actually creating story took place, and then wanting to develop my writing ability, and voila! I'm pretty sure for the first while I was creating characters in 4 or 5 threads, because you knew a couple would die, and honestly it was just exciting getting to create a new character and imagine something new.
Ren's F&F I think was possibly the big crossover thread for this group. Some of the best writing I've had the privilege of being a party to, and I think it took those of us in it down a new path in how we GM (see Shari's post for more details). That's the best I can remember.
My big contribution has been simply exploiting the success that was VotS and the airship theme to get people to join my threads haha ^_^
GI, glad to see you're still around man. Enjoy it all, you'll miss it when it's gone... at least I do. Okay, maybe not the work, but the lifestyle that goes with it. If you have time please do partake in some writing, we always need for quality rpers here.
Geco, I wish I could jump in, but homework is demanding and my professors are really grilling me on all of my work. I've also got my hands tied with other projects that require my attention, but if I get just the smallest inkling of time, I will definitely look into joining or participating in Sky Company. How's everything on your end?
GI - Great to see you again. :) Happy that you haven't forgotten us. I was thinking of you the other day (fondly i promise :p).
You'll find that right now you're experiencing shock and that you get used to it. You dont' so much find time as get more efficient at using it to your advantage and also getting more efficient at repetitious assignments.
Geco - same goes for you too. :) You get used to the hours, sort of. More or less, you get used to the lack of sleep. If you don't stay up past working hours and crash when you get home, you'll have literally no life but work. you have to get used to less hours. You'll actually feel better on less sleep (make it up on the weekends) because you'll feel like you exist. Otherwise you turn into a zombie (me two months ago).
Sorry everyone. I'm visiting friends and didn't bring my laptop with me, so Internet, let alone computer, access is pretty non existent. Will be back at my home Sun ^_^
